LAWMA Urges Calm Over Solous III Fire Incident
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has appealed to residents to remain calm following a fire outbreak at the closed Solous III dumpsite in Igando, assuring the public that emergency response agencies are actively working to contain the incident and minimise its environmental impact. The authority also confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

According to LAWMA, the agency is collaborating closely with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, security agencies and other emergency responders to bring the situation under control while protecting lives, nearby communities and public infrastructure. Officials stressed that there have been no reports of casualties linked to the incident.
Emergency Agencies Respond to Fire
LAWMA said emergency teams were deployed immediately after the fire was reported at the closed landfill. The coordinated response is aimed at extinguishing the blaze, limiting smoke emissions and preventing the fire from spreading beyond the site.
The authority noted that all relevant agencies remain on the ground to monitor the situation and implement appropriate safety measures until the fire is fully contained.
Investigation Into Cause Underway
While acknowledging public concern, LAWMA said it would be premature to speculate on the origin of the fire until investigations are completed.
The agency stated that preliminary information has been received, but officials are still gathering and verifying evidence before reaching any conclusions. It pledged to make the findings public once the investigation is concluded.
Residents Urged to Avoid Misinformation
LAWMA urged residents living around the Solous area and the wider Lagos community to disregard rumours and rely only on verified information released through the agency's official communication channels.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, adding that regular updates would be provided as emergency operations and investigations progress.
Waste Management Infrastructure Remains Under Review
The incident comes as Lagos State continues efforts to modernise its waste management system. Earlier this year, LAWMA announced plans to phase out the Olusosun and Solous landfill sites as part of broader reforms that include the development of transfer loading stations and material recovery facilities to improve waste processing and reduce reliance on traditional dumpsites.
Environmental experts have consistently highlighted the need for modern waste management infrastructure to reduce the risk of landfill fires, improve environmental quality and protect nearby communities.
Looking Ahead
As emergency responders continue efforts to extinguish the fire, LAWMA has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and maintaining environmental standards across Lagos State.
The outcome of the ongoing investigation is expected to inform any additional safety measures required at closed landfill sites, while reinforcing the importance of continued investment in sustainable waste management infrastructure and environmental protection.
