Lagos Calls for Greater Resident Involvement in Estate Management

The Lagos State Government has called on residents of government-owned housing estates to take greater responsibility for maintaining their neighbourhoods, saying collective stewardship is essential to preserving infrastructure, improving security and sustaining property values across the estates. The appeal was made during the Ministry of Housing's monthly stakeholders' engagement held at the Millennium Housing Estate in Agbado-Ijaiye, Ojokoro.

Government Seeks Stronger Resident Participation

Speaking at the engagement, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Housing, Abdulhafis Toriola, said the forum was created to strengthen collaboration between government and residents while providing an avenue to identify operational challenges and receive feedback that would improve estate management. He stressed that residents have a shared responsibility to protect the infrastructure within their communities rather than relying solely on government intervention.

According to Toriola, taking ownership of residential estates helps preserve the long-term value of public housing assets while creating safer and more sustainable communities. He encouraged residents to promptly address minor maintenance issues within their capacity and report larger concerns to the relevant authorities before they escalate into more costly problems.

Estate Maintenance Critical to Sustainable Housing

The state government noted that proper estate management extends beyond building maintenance to include environmental sanitation, protection of shared infrastructure and adherence to estate regulations. Officials said these measures contribute to orderly neighbourhoods, enhance residents' quality of life and protect public investment in housing infrastructure.

The ministry explained that regular stakeholder engagements have become an important mechanism for identifying issues affecting government-owned estates and developing practical solutions through dialogue with residents. Feedback gathered during the meetings has helped authorities prioritise infrastructure upgrades and improve estate administration across various housing schemes.

Shared Responsibility for Public Housing

The appeal aligns with the Lagos State Government's broader strategy of promoting collaborative management of public housing estates. Authorities have consistently urged allottees and residents to comply with estate guidelines, preserve common facilities and support initiatives aimed at maintaining the integrity of government-developed communities.

Housing experts have long argued that effective estate management is essential to protecting property values and extending the lifespan of residential infrastructure. Well-maintained estates also enhance investor confidence and reduce the financial burden associated with major rehabilitation projects.

Looking Ahead

As Lagos continues to expand its housing stock to meet growing demand, the government says sustainable estate management will depend on stronger partnerships with residents. By encouraging greater community participation, regular maintenance and compliance with estate regulations, the state aims to safeguard public housing investments while ensuring government-owned estates remain safe, attractive and economically viable for years to come.
