Significant Progress Across Key Corridors
According to the resident engineer overseeing the project, construction has advanced steadily across the two main corridors, with intensified work on the Kano–Dutse axis. The project spans multiple states in the North-West and forms part of a broader strategy to improve regional rail connectivity and cross-border trade links with Niger Republic.
Engineers reported that foundation works, including piling and substructure development for several bridges, have reached advanced stages, while superstructure installation is ongoing at multiple locations along the route.
Key Project Scope and Infrastructure Components
The railway line includes extensive earthworks, track laying, and bridge construction across challenging terrains and waterways. Significant milestones have already been achieved on the Kano–Jigawa section, which covers approximately 104 kilometres, alongside the branch line connecting Kano to Dutse.
Officials also noted that the project is fully funded under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Infrastructure Programme, reflecting its strategic importance within Nigeria’s national transport agenda.
Economic and Connectivity Objectives
The Kano–Maradi rail project is designed to strengthen trade corridors between Nigeria and Niger Republic, improve freight movement, and reduce logistics costs across the northern region. It is also expected to enhance agricultural and industrial distribution channels, supporting broader economic integration within West Africa.
The Federal Government maintains that improved rail infrastructure will play a critical role in boosting productivity, easing road congestion, and stimulating regional development.
Delivery Timeline and Outlook
With 60 percent of the project completed, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering the rail line by December 2027. Authorities have emphasised continued inspection and monitoring to ensure that construction milestones align with the revised implementation schedule.
The Kano-Maradi railway reaching 60 percent completion marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s rail modernisation efforts. While substantial work remains, the project continues to advance steadily toward its 2027 delivery target. Its completion is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, enhance trade flows, and support long-term economic development across the North-West corridor.
