Residents who spoke in separate interviews said inadequate waste collection, limited access to designated disposal sites and irregular evacuation of refuse have contributed to the accumulation of waste in several neighbourhoods. They warned that the situation threatens environmental quality and increases the risk of disease outbreaks, particularly during the rainy season.
Residents Seek Better Waste Collection
Many residents urged the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to expand waste collection services, provide more waste bins and ensure contractors evacuate refuse promptly.
They also called for stronger public awareness campaigns to discourage indiscriminate dumping and encourage responsible waste disposal, stressing that cleaner communities require both effective government services and greater public participation.
Some residents noted that overflowing refuse dumps have become common in parts of the FCT, affecting the appearance of communities, polluting the environment and creating breeding grounds for rodents and disease-carrying insects.

The call aligns with ongoing efforts by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to improve waste management standards and ensure contractors meet their responsibilities for timely refuse evacuation across the capital.
