LASEPA Seals 11 Lagos Establishments Over Environmental Violations

Lagos Environmental Agency Seals 11 Facilities Over Repeated Violations

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has sealed 11 establishments in Agege and Mushin following repeated breaches of environmental regulations, including noise and air pollution.

The enforcement exercise, which took place on Tuesday, followed previous warnings and abatement notices issued to the affected operators. According to LASEPA, the establishments had opportunities to address the identified breaches but failed to meet the agency’s requirements.

LASEPA Seals Six Establishments in Mushin

Six establishments in Mushin were sealed during the enforcement operation.

They included Akorohunfayo Central Mosque on Akorohunfayo Street, Fadeyi; Holy Temple of Christ on Ayetoro Street; Christ Covenant Gospel Church, Western District, along Ikorodu Road, Fadeyi; and Christ Apostolic Church (Oye Iyanu) at Mushin Road, Church Bus Stop, Itire.

LASEPA identified noise pollution as the basis for enforcement against the four religious establishments.

The agency also sealed Biolarique Bakery Academy on Mushin Road for failing to comply with its directives, while Tiles & Marbles on Silver Street, Olorunsogo, Mushin, faced enforcement action over air pollution.

The operation shows that LASEPA's environmental compliance efforts cover different categories of land use, including religious centres, commercial facilities and businesses with potentially polluting activities.

Five Scrap Yards Shut Over Environmental Breaches

LASEPA also sealed five scrap yards located in Agege and Mushin.

According to the agency, the facilities violated environmental requirements through pollution, failure to comply with previous directives and, in some cases, the inability to provide evidence of an E-Waste Permit.

The affected operators included Abubakar Scrap at Pipeline, Ifako-Ijaiye, Agege; Benjamin Scrap Yard on Ladoje Street, Oko Oba, Agege; Starlas and Sons Scrap Yard at the same location; Jamin Scrap Yard at Jungle Bus Stop, Iju Road, Agege; and another scrap yard on Olu Aina Street, Daleko, Mushin.

Scrap-processing activities can create environmental risks when operators fail to properly manage waste materials, including discarded metals and electronic equipment. Regulatory oversight therefore remains important in areas where such businesses operate close to residential communities.

LASEPA Warns Operators Against Non-Compliance

LASEPA General Manager, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, reaffirmed the agency's commitment to enforcing environmental regulations across Lagos.

Ajayi urged business owners, religious organisations, facility operators and scrap dealers to comply with applicable environmental requirements and obtain the necessary permits and approvals for their operations.

The Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017 provides the legal framework for environmental regulation in the state and empowers relevant authorities to monitor compliance and take enforcement action where environmental standards are breached.

LASEPA has continued to conduct enforcement operations against establishments accused of violating regulations covering noise, air quality and other environmental concerns across the state.

Environmental Compliance and the Built Environment

The latest enforcement has implications for Lagos' wider built environment, where residential, commercial, religious and industrial activities often operate within close proximity.

Noise and air pollution can affect the quality of life in surrounding communities and create conflicts between property users and neighbouring establishments. Effective environmental regulation can help limit these conflicts while supporting healthier urban communities.

For property owners, developers and investors, environmental compliance should form part of project planning and property management. This includes understanding applicable environmental requirements, securing relevant approvals and ensuring that operations remain within prescribed standards.

Compliance can also reduce the risk of regulatory action, business interruptions and disputes with surrounding communities.

Regulatory Oversight Grows as Lagos Urbanises

Lagos' continued population growth and urban expansion are increasing pressure on land and infrastructure. As residential neighbourhoods expand alongside commercial and industrial activities, environmental management becomes increasingly important to sustainable urban development.

For investors and developers, the enforcement reinforces the need to assess environmental considerations alongside planning, construction and land-use requirements.

Businesses operating within densely populated areas also face a greater need to manage activities that may affect nearby residents, particularly where noise, emissions or waste generation form part of their operations.

Outlook

The sealing of 11 establishments underscores LASEPA's continued enforcement of environmental regulations across Lagos.

As the state intensifies environmental monitoring, businesses, religious organisations, scrap operators and property owners will need to maintain compliance with applicable standards and secure the required permits.

For Lagos' rapidly developing urban environment, consistent enforcement can help improve environmental standards, reduce conflicts between different land uses and support healthier communities.
