Gunmen Raid Schools in Oyo, Abduct Staff and Students

Gunmen have attacked schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, killing a teacher and abducting a school principal, staff members and several students in a coordinated assault that has heightened security concerns in the South-West region. The attack occurred in the Ahoro-Esiele community, where armed assailants reportedly stormed multiple schools and surrounding areas on motorcycles before fleeing with their victims.

According to the Oyo State Police Command, the attackers invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, as well as Community Grammar School and L.A. Primary School in Esiele during the early hours of May 15. Authorities confirmed that an assistant headmaster identified as Mr Adesiyan was killed during the attack, while the vice principal, Mrs Alamu Folawe, alongside students and other staff members, was abducted.

The incident has triggered widespread panic among residents and parents in the affected communities, with security agencies launching an extensive rescue operation across the area.

Police Deploy Tactical Teams for Rescue Operations

The Oyo State Police Command stated that tactical operatives and intelligence teams have been deployed to the affected communities to track down the perpetrators and secure the release of the abducted victims. Police spokesperson DSP Ayanlade Olayinka said Commissioner of Police Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga personally led operational teams to the scene shortly after the attack.

According to the police, the attackers also seized a Toyota Corolla belonging to the abducted vice principal before later setting the vehicle ablaze along a forest route used during their escape.

Authorities added that security operations now involve coordinated efforts among police personnel, local security outfits and intelligence networks to prevent further attacks and improve surveillance within vulnerable communities.

Separately, the Associated Press reported that police had detained three suspects in connection with the attack after local residents identified individuals allegedly linked to the operation. Authorities, however, stated that investigations remain ongoing.
