Federal Government Approves 600 Duplexes in Life Camp, Abuja

The Federal Government has approved the direct purchase of 600 four-bedroom terrace duplexes in Life Camp, Abuja, for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces as part of efforts to improve military welfare and access to decent accommodation.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the purchase of the homes at Bristol City Development, Life Camp, following a memorandum presented by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

600 Units Approved in Life Camp

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Rabe Darma, said the 600 units form part of the Federal Government’s ongoing intervention to improve housing conditions for military personnel.

The minister said housing remains an important component of the welfare package for members of the Armed Forces, given the demands associated with military service.

The Life Camp development will provide four-bedroom terrace duplexes specifically for eligible military personnel rather than the wider Abuja housing market.

The approval adds to government efforts to provide more suitable accommodation for servicemen and women and their families.

Military Housing Approvals Rise to 2,156 Units

The latest approval is part of a wider military housing programme.

According to the Housing Minister, the Federal Government had previously secured approval for 1,556 housing units in Deidei, Abuja, for Armed Forces personnel.

With the additional 600 units at Life Camp, the number of approved units under the current military housing intervention has risen to 2,156.

The government has set a broader target of delivering 10,000 housing units for members of the Armed Forces.

This means the 2,156 approved units represent an important stage of the programme, although a substantial gap remains before the 10,000-unit target can be achieved.

Housing Linked to Military Welfare

The Federal Government has increasingly positioned housing as part of efforts to improve conditions of service for military personnel.

Access to suitable accommodation can reduce the financial burden associated with housing costs and provide greater stability for service members and their families.

For military personnel posted to Abuja, where housing and rental costs remain relatively high, access to dedicated government-backed accommodation could provide a measure of financial relief.

The intervention also reflects the broader role of housing in personnel welfare, particularly for occupations that require frequent postings, long working hours and service in challenging environments.

Life Camp Adds to Abuja’s Housing Stock

The 600-unit development will also add a sizeable residential project to Abuja’s housing market.

Abuja continues to experience demand for residential accommodation, while land, construction and rental costs have increased the cost of securing suitable homes.

Although the Life Camp units are reserved for military personnel, their development contributes to the city’s overall residential stock and demonstrates continued public-sector demand for large-scale housing projects.

For the wider property sector, government-backed housing programmes can create demand for construction materials, professional services and other components of the housing value chain.

Delivery Remains the Key Test

The approval of the 600 units represents an important policy step, but actual delivery will determine the programme’s impact.

The Federal Government will need to ensure that the approved homes are completed within the expected timeframe, meet required construction standards and reach the intended beneficiaries.

The same consideration applies to the wider 10,000-unit target. Moving from approvals to completed and occupied homes will be critical if the intervention is to produce a measurable improvement in military housing conditions.

Effective allocation will also be important to ensure that eligible personnel benefit from the programme in a transparent and accountable manner.

Implications for Nigeria’s Housing Sector

The military housing programme demonstrates the potential role of public-sector demand in supporting residential development.

Large government-backed housing programmes can provide predictable demand for developers and contractors while supporting activity across construction, building materials, engineering, architecture and property management.

However, the wider housing impact will depend on the scale, location and pace of delivery.

For Abuja, additional housing supply remains important as population growth and economic activity continue to support demand for residential properties. Dedicated housing programmes for specific groups such as military personnel can also reduce pressure on the general rental market when they provide adequate accommodation for beneficiaries.

Outlook

The Federal Government’s approval of 600 four-bedroom terrace duplexes in Life Camp takes the number of approved military housing units under the current intervention to 2,156, against a broader target of 10,000 homes.

The immediate priority will be translating the approvals into completed and properly allocated homes. The pace and quality of delivery will determine whether the programme can significantly improve accommodation for Armed Forces personnel while contributing to broader residential development in Abuja.

For Nigeria’s housing sector, the intervention reinforces the importance of sustained public investment and demand in expanding housing supply and supporting activity across the construction and real estate value chain.
