Free Petrol Delivery Begins as Dangote Refinery Targets Lower Logistics Costs

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has commenced the free delivery of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and five states, a move aimed at reducing fuel distribution costs and improving supply efficiency. The initiative allows marketers to receive petrol without transportation charges while the refinery maintains its ex-depot price of ₦1,075 per litre

The rollout forms part of the refinery's broader strategy to streamline downstream fuel distribution, lower logistics costs and support more stable petrol pricing across the country. Industry observers say the initiative could improve product availability and strengthen competition in Nigeria's downstream petroleum market.

Free Distribution Begins in Six Locations

According to the refinery, the first phase of the programme covers the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) and five states, with plans to expand the free delivery network to additional parts of the country as logistics operations scale up. Under the arrangement, independent marketers purchasing directly from the refinery will receive petrol delivered at no additional transportation cost.

The refinery said removing haulage costs is expected to improve supply chain efficiency while making it easier for marketers to transport products to retail outlets.

Lower Distribution Costs May Support Pump Price Stability

Transportation remains one of the largest components of petrol pricing after the ex-depot cost. By absorbing delivery expenses, the refinery expects marketers to experience lower operating costs, a development that could contribute to more competitive pump prices, depending on market conditions and retail pricing decisions.

Analysts note that while retail prices are influenced by several factors including crude oil prices, exchange rates and operational costs reduced logistics expenses can ease cost pressures within the downstream supply chain.

Strengthening Nigeria's Fuel Supply Network

The free delivery initiative represents another step in the refinery's efforts to strengthen domestic fuel distribution following increased refining capacity and expanding nationwide supply operations.

Industry stakeholders believe improved distribution efficiency could reduce supply disruptions, enhance product availability and lessen dependence on third-party logistics, particularly in high-demand markets.

Wider Economic Implications

More efficient fuel distribution has broader implications for Nigeria's economy beyond the energy sector.

Lower logistics costs can reduce transportation expenses for businesses, support commercial activities and improve the movement of goods and services. For the housing and construction sectors, greater fuel availability may also help moderate transportation and equipment operating costs, which influence construction projects and building material distribution.

Outlook

The commencement of free petrol delivery marks a significant development in Nigeria's downstream petroleum sector. If successfully expanded nationwide, the initiative could improve fuel distribution efficiency, strengthen market competition and contribute to more stable energy supply across the country. Its long-term impact on retail petrol prices will depend on broader market dynamics, but reduced logistics costs are expected to provide some relief to marketers and consumers alike.
