Speaking at the CBN Fair in Gombe State, Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali, who represented CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, said expanding digital payment adoption would improve access to financial services, stimulate economic activity and support the Bank's mandate of maintaining monetary, price and financial system stability.
Driving a Cash-Lite Economy
The event, themed "Driving Alternative Payment Channels as Tools for Financial Inclusion, Growth and Accelerated Economic Development," highlighted the CBN's efforts to encourage greater use of digital financial services, including mobile payments, electronic transfers and other alternative payment solutions.
According to the apex bank, increasing the adoption of digital payment platforms will make financial services more accessible, particularly for underserved communities, while promoting transparency and efficiency across the economy.
Supporting Financial Sector Reforms
The CBN also highlighted key initiatives supporting its financial inclusion agenda, including the Nigeria Payments System Vision 2028, the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative and the B-Match foreign exchange trading platform. These reforms are designed to modernise Nigeria's payment ecosystem, strengthen confidence in the financial system and improve access to banking services.
Officials noted that recent monetary policy reforms have contributed to easing inflationary pressures, improving foreign exchange market stability and strengthening external reserves, creating a more supportive environment for digital financial services.
Implications for Housing and Real Estate
Greater financial inclusion could deliver long-term benefits for Nigeria's housing and real estate sector by expanding access to formal financial services and digital payment platforms.
Improved digital payment infrastructure can support mortgage repayments, rent collection, property transactions and access to housing finance, particularly in underserved communities. It also strengthens the foundation for PropTech solutions, digital land administration and more efficient real estate transactions.
Why It Matters
Financial inclusion remains critical to Nigeria's economic development. By expanding access to secure and affordable payment systems, the CBN aims to bring more individuals and businesses into the formal financial system, supporting entrepreneurship, investment and inclusive growth.
For the housing sector, wider financial inclusion could help broaden access to mortgage products and other housing finance solutions, contributing to increased homeownership and more resilient property markets.
Outlook
The success of the CBN's strategy will depend on sustained investment in digital infrastructure, public awareness and collaboration with financial institutions and fintech companies. As alternative payment channels become more widely adopted, Nigeria is expected to move closer to achieving a more inclusive digital economy that supports housing, commerce and long-term economic growth.
