Apo Mechanics Relocation to Wassa Now Reality, Says Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the relocation of the Apo Mechanics Village to Wassa as a major breakthrough in Abuja’s urban development agenda, declaring that the long-delayed initiative has finally become a reality under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Wike made the remarks during an inspection tour of several ongoing infrastructure projects across the FCT, including the Wassa informal sector roads, Road CN2 in Katampe, the OSEX Main Carriageways, and the Gaduwa Road corridor.

Apo Mechanics Relocation Moves Forward After Years of Delay

According to the minister, previous administrations had struggled unsuccessfully to relocate mechanics and traders operating within the Apo area, making the Wassa development a significant milestone in the FCT’s urban renewal programme.

“This is another promise made and fulfilled,” Wike stated during the inspection exercise, noting that the relocation had remained unresolved for several years before the current administration implemented concrete steps toward completion.

The relocation project forms part of broader efforts by the FCT Administration to reorganise informal commercial clusters, improve urban planning, and reduce congestion within key districts of Abuja.

Wike explained that infrastructure within the Wassa relocation site is nearing completion, with road construction already at an advanced stage. The administration also plans to install solar-powered streetlights and water infrastructure to support businesses and residents operating within the new mechanics and artisan hub.

Infrastructure Development Expected to Boost Economic Activity

The minister stated that the development would improve working conditions for artisans and traders while strengthening economic activity within the FCT.

According to Wike, the formalisation of the Wassa informal sector is expected to enhance Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) through increased commercial operations and improved infrastructure access.

Urban planning experts have consistently argued that organised informal sector developments can improve productivity, reduce environmental degradation, and create more sustainable commercial ecosystems within rapidly expanding cities such as Abuja.

The Wassa development also aligns with ongoing efforts by the FCT Administration to decentralise commercial activities and expand economic opportunities beyond the city centre.

Progress Recorded on Major Road Projects

During the inspection tour, Wike expressed satisfaction with the pace of work across multiple road and bridge projects currently under construction within the capital territory.

At the OSEX Main Carriageway project, the minister commended contractors for the rapid completion of a major bridge component, describing the progress as exceeding expectations.

He subsequently directed the extension of the OSEX II road corridor to Wassa Junction, covering approximately 10 kilometres, to improve traffic connectivity and mobility within the area.

The minister also praised ongoing work at the Road CN2 project near Gishiri, where contractors have commenced the installation of streetlights and pedestrian walkways as part of broader infrastructure upgrades.

Additional projects inspected by the minister included the Airport Road to Kuje corridor, the Kuje-Gwagwalada road, the Jahi-Gwarinpa interchange, and the Abuja City Gate development project.

Projects Targeted for Tinubu Administration Anniversary

Wike reiterated that several ongoing projects are expected to be commissioned as part of activities marking President Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

The minister urged contractors handling strategic infrastructure projects to maintain agreed timelines and ensure timely delivery.

Among the projects scheduled for inauguration are roads in Katampe, Gishiri, and Gaduwa, water treatment facilities in Bwari and Ushafa, sections of the Kuje-Gwagwalada corridor, and the redevelopment of the Apo mechanics relocation site.

The City Gate project, currently under construction, is also expected to feature surveillance infrastructure and AI-enabled monitoring systems aimed at improving security within the capital territory.

Abuja Urban Renewal Agenda Expands

The ongoing projects reflect the FCT Administration’s wider infrastructure and urban renewal strategy focused on improving transportation networks, easing traffic congestion, and supporting planned urban expansion across Abuja.

Analysts note that road infrastructure remains central to Abuja’s long-term development framework, particularly as population growth and commercial activity continue to expand into suburban districts and satellite communities.

The integration of relocation schemes, road expansion, utility infrastructure, and commercial development also demonstrates a broader policy shift toward structured urban management within the Federal Capital Territory.

Nyesom Wike’s inspection of ongoing infrastructure projects and his declaration on the successful relocation of Apo Mechanics Village underscore the FCT Administration’s renewed focus on urban renewal and infrastructure delivery.

With several strategic projects approaching completion, the administration aims to improve transportation, support economic activity, and strengthen urban planning across Abuja. The Wassa relocation project, in particular, represents a significant milestone in the effort to formalise informal sector operations and create a more organised commercial environment within the Federal Capital Territory.
