Spain’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Félix Artieda, speaks on improving relations between both countries.

Spain says its relationship with Nigeria is improving, with opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, investment and other areas of mutual interest.

Spain’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Félix Artieda, made the remarks on Monday during Spain’s National Day celebration in Abuja, which brought together diplomats, business leaders and media practitioners. The event also provided an opportunity for networking and strengthening professional relationships between participants.

Artieda described 2026 as a positive year for relations between both countries, expressing optimism about the prospects for continued engagement.

Trade and Investment Remain Key Areas of Cooperation

The ambassador identified trade and investment as important areas in which Spain and Nigeria could deepen their relationship.

The wider partnership also offers opportunities for cooperation in education, tourism and cultural exchange. Spain’s National Day celebration in Nigeria provides a platform for promoting these ties and bringing together representatives from diplomatic, business and professional communities.

However, the ambassador’s remarks did not announce a new bilateral trade agreement, investment commitment or specific project. Rather, they highlighted the improving relationship and prospects for further cooperation.

Spain Highlights Economic Performance and Tourism Prospects

Artieda said Spain’s economy had continued to perform above the European Union average, while employment had reached an all-time high.

He also said Spain expected to receive 100 million visitors in 2026, pointing to its cultural heritage and contributions to fashion, cinema and sports as factors behind its international appeal.

Tourism remains one of the areas through which both countries can promote cultural exchange and strengthen engagement. For Nigeria, deeper cooperation could create opportunities for business connections and exchanges, although the ambassador did not announce specific tourism initiatives during the event.

Ambassador Calls for Peaceful Elections in Both Countries

The ambassador also expressed hope that forthcoming elections in Spain and Nigeria would be peaceful.

He said Spain’s elections were scheduled for November 29, 2026, while Nigeria’s were expected to take place on January 16, 2027.

Artieda described Nigeria’s electoral process as significant beyond its borders because of the country’s large electorate and its importance to neighbouring countries and the wider African continent.

His comments placed democratic stability among the issues of shared interest between the two countries.

Bilateral Relations Extend Beyond Economic Ties

Spain’s National Day celebration also recognised the Spanish community in Nigeria and the work of embassy staff in maintaining diplomatic relations.

The annual celebration, observed on October 12, commemorates Spain’s national heritage and serves as an opportunity to promote cooperation with other countries. In Nigeria, the event provides a platform for advancing cultural exchange and engagement in trade, investment, education and tourism.

Nigeria and Spain have previously discussed cooperation in areas including energy, infrastructure, renewable energy, agriculture and digital innovation. These sectors present potential areas for further economic engagement, although the latest remarks focused on the general direction of bilateral relations rather than specific commitments.

Outlook

Spain’s latest comments point to continued interest in strengthening its relationship with Nigeria, particularly in trade, investment and other areas of mutual interest.

The practical significance of that relationship will depend on whether the two countries translate diplomatic engagement into concrete commercial partnerships, investment flows and programmes that benefit businesses and citizens.

For Nigeria, sustained engagement with international partners can broaden opportunities for investment and economic cooperation. However, the ambassador’s remarks represent an expression of intent and optimism, rather than confirmation of new agreements or funding commitments.
