Lagos Diverts Traffic on Baale Animashaun Road for Eight Weeks Over Drainage Project
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi
The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion on Baale Animashaun Road in Ifako-Ijaiye as construction work begins on a major drainage infrastructure project. The diversion, which takes effect from June 15, 2026, will remain in place for eight weeks to allow the construction of a culvert designed to improve stormwater management and reduce flooding in the area.

The project forms part of the state's ongoing efforts to strengthen drainage infrastructure and address recurring flooding challenges affecting several communities in the corridor. According to the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the works will channel stormwater runoff from Adfarm Estate, Adson Street, and adjoining neighbourhoods through a newly constructed drainage system.
Construction to Improve Flood Control Infrastructure
The state government said the culvert construction is a critical component of a broader drainage reconstruction initiative aimed at improving water flow and mitigating flood risks in Ifako-Ijaiye and surrounding areas.
Authorities noted that the drainage intervention is expected to enhance the area's resilience to heavy rainfall while improving road safety and protecting nearby residential communities from flooding-related disruptions.
The project is scheduled to commence on June 15 and is expected to be completed within eight weeks, during which traffic movement around the affected corridor will be significantly altered.
Alternative Routes Announced for Motorists
To minimise disruption, the Lagos State Government has released several alternative routes for motorists who ordinarily access Baale Animashaun Road through the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
Motorists travelling from the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway towards Baale Animashaun Road have been advised to use Ijaiye Bus Stop Junction through Agbado-Ijaiye Road, also known as Post Office Road, before connecting to Alakuko Road and rejoining their intended route.
As an alternative, road users may access the area through Jendor Junction near Alakuko Junction via Alhaji Ganiyu Road before reconnecting with Baale Animashaun Road.
A third diversion route has also been provided through Ajegunle-Ilo Bus Stop, Adetiba Street, Fagbeyiro Abayomi Street, and Fola Azeez Street, enabling motorists to reach destinations along the corridor during the construction period.
Access Restrictions During Construction
The state government confirmed that there will be no vehicular access into Baale Animashaun Road directly from the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway while construction activities are ongoing.
According to transportation authorities, the closure is necessary to ensure the safe and efficient execution of the project. Traffic management officials will be deployed to guide motorists and reduce congestion around affected routes.
The Commissioner for Transportation urged motorists to comply with all traffic signs, road markings, and directives from traffic officers throughout the construction period to ensure smooth vehicular movement and minimise delays.
Infrastructure Development Remains a Priority
The latest traffic diversion reflects Lagos State's continued investment in infrastructure projects aimed at addressing urban challenges associated with rapid population growth and increasing pressure on drainage systems.
Flood control projects have become a major focus for the state government as authorities seek to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding on residents, businesses, and transportation networks. The drainage reconstruction project on Baale Animashaun Road is expected to contribute to these broader efforts by improving water management capacity within the Ifako-Ijaiye axis.
Conclusion
The eight-week traffic diversion on Baale Animashaun Road marks the beginning of a key drainage infrastructure project designed to improve flood management in Ifako-Ijaiye and neighbouring communities. While motorists may experience temporary disruptions, the Lagos State Government says the project will deliver long-term benefits through enhanced drainage capacity, reduced flooding risks, and improved road safety. Residents and commuters have been advised to utilise designated alternative routes and cooperate with traffic officials until construction is completed.
