Federal Government Intensifies Illegal Mining Crackdown, Shuts Osun Gold Site

Nigeria Steps Up Illegal Mining Enforcement as FG Shuts Osun Gold Camp

The Federal Government has intensified its campaign against illegal mining by sealing an illegal gold mining site in Osun State, arresting two suspects, and widening investigations to identify the financiers and organisers behind the operation. The enforcement action forms part of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development's broader strategy to strengthen regulatory compliance, protect mineral resources, and curb illicit activities within Nigeria's mining sector.

The operation was carried out by officials of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in collaboration with security agencies following intelligence reports on illegal artisanal mining activities at Ileki-Ijesa, located along the Ile-Ife–Ilesa Road in Osun State.

Two suspects arrested as authorities pursue financiers

According to the Ministry, two suspects identified as Danladi Isa and Musa Kabiru were arrested during the operation. Officials described both individuals as casual workers who are assisting investigators with information expected to lead to the arrest of those financing and coordinating the illegal mining operation.

Authorities disclosed that several other individuals fled the site when the joint enforcement team arrived, prompting investigators to shift focus towards dismantling the wider network supporting the illegal mining activities.

The Federal Government stated that targeting financiers is a critical component of its enforcement strategy, as many illegal mining operations are sustained by organised funding networks rather than individual artisanal miners alone.

Mining equipment confiscated and site sealed

During the enforcement exercise, officials dismantled operational camps established by the illegal miners and confiscated equipment used for gold extraction.

Recovered items included:

  • Two motorcycles

  • Pumping machines

  • Lister generators

  • Mineral washing equipment

  • Large hose pipes

  • Gold-trapping carpets

  • Cutlasses

  • Other mining implements

Following the operation, authorities sealed the mining site in accordance with the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act.

Government reinforces commitment to mining sector regulation

Speaking during the exercise, the Southwest Zonal Mines Officer, Ajibade Ganiyu, said the operation reflects the Federal Government's continued commitment to enforcing mining regulations across the country.

According to the Ministry, the ongoing enforcement campaign seeks to:

  • Protect Nigeria's mineral resources from illegal exploitation.

  • Safeguard communities and the environment affected by unregulated mining.

  • Improve compliance with mining laws.

  • Restore confidence in the formal mining sector.

  • Eliminate criminal networks operating within the industry.

The Ministry added that surveillance and enforcement operations will continue across the South-West and other regions as part of a nationwide effort to restore order to the mining industry.

Why the crackdown matters

Illegal mining remains one of the major challenges facing Nigeria's solid minerals sector. Beyond depriving government of legitimate revenue, unauthorised mining activities often contribute to environmental degradation, unsafe working conditions, security concerns and the destruction of host communities.

The Federal Government has increasingly prioritised formalisation of the mining industry as part of efforts to diversify the economy beyond oil revenues. Recent enforcement actions indicate a shift towards dismantling the financial networks that support illegal mining rather than focusing solely on operators found at mining sites.

Industry stakeholders have argued that stronger enforcement, combined with improved licensing processes and increased investment in responsible mining, could enhance investor confidence while boosting government revenue from the solid minerals sector.

Outlook

The latest enforcement operation in Osun State underscores the Federal Government's determination to strengthen oversight of Nigeria's mining industry. By targeting both illegal mining sites and the financiers behind them, authorities aim to disrupt organised mineral theft, improve regulatory compliance, and support the long-term development of the country's solid minerals sector. As investigations continue, additional arrests and enforcement actions are expected as officials seek to dismantle the wider networks driving illegal gold mining activities.
