Renewed Hope Housing Scheme Expands as FG Delivers 116 Homes to Benue

The Federal Government has officially handed over 116 completed housing units under the National Housing Programme to the Benue State Government, marking another milestone in efforts to expand access to affordable housing and strengthen collaboration with sub-national governments. The housing estate, acquired by the Benue State Government, will primarily serve civil servants and low-income earners through affordable homeownership initiatives, including a rent-to-own scheme.

The formal handover ceremony took place at the Government House in Makurdi, where representatives of the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development described the project as part of the Federal Government's broader commitment to reducing Nigeria's housing deficit under the National Housing Programme and the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Federal and State Governments Strengthen Housing Partnership

Representing the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, the Director of Public Buildings and Housing Development, Quantity Surveyor Pemi Samuel Temitope, said the transfer of the housing units demonstrates the importance of collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments in addressing Nigeria's growing housing needs.

According to the ministry, the National Housing Programme was established to increase the supply of quality, affordable homes across Nigeria while supporting economic development through construction activities, job creation and the use of locally sourced building materials.

Temitope also commended the Benue State Government for acquiring the housing estate, describing the decision as a strategic investment that will improve access to decent housing for residents.

Benue to Deploy Rent-to-Own Scheme

Receiving the housing units on behalf of Governor Hyacinth Alia, the Acting Head of the Benue State Civil Service, Dr Eunice Ogbenyi-Ihu, said the state acquired the estate to improve the welfare of civil servants and address the housing challenges faced by many residents.

She disclosed that the allocation process would be transparent and that eligible beneficiaries would have access to both direct purchase and rent-to-own options, enabling low-income earners to gradually become homeowners.

The housing estate has also been named in honour of the late former Head of Service, Dr Moses Agbogbo Odeh, in recognition of his contributions to the state's public service.

National Housing Programme Supports Affordable Housing Delivery

The National Housing Programme remains one of the Federal Government's flagship interventions aimed at reducing Nigeria's estimated housing deficit through the construction of affordable homes across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Beyond providing housing, the programme is designed to stimulate local economies by creating employment opportunities for artisans, contractors and suppliers while promoting the use of indigenous building materials. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has consistently maintained that expanding access to affordable housing contributes to improved living standards, social stability and sustainable urban development.

Implications for Housing Delivery

The transfer of the 116 housing units highlights an increasingly collaborative approach to housing delivery, where completed federal housing projects are managed in partnership with state governments to improve occupancy and accessibility.

For Benue State, the initiative is expected to provide immediate relief for civil servants and other low-income households facing rising housing costs. The adoption of a rent-to-own model also reflects growing interest in alternative housing finance mechanisms that expand homeownership opportunities without requiring substantial upfront payments.

Housing experts note that stronger federal-state partnerships could accelerate the delivery of affordable housing while ensuring completed estates are efficiently allocated and occupied.

Looking Ahead

The handover of 116 housing units to the Benue State Government underscores the Federal Government's continued efforts to address Nigeria's housing deficit through strategic partnerships and targeted housing interventions. By combining federal housing delivery with state-led allocation and financing models, the initiative aims to make homeownership more accessible to civil servants and low-income earners.

As implementation of the National Housing Programme continues nationwide, similar collaborations between federal and state governments are expected to play an increasingly important role in expanding affordable housing, improving urban development and supporting sustainable communities.
