Zamfara Courts Chinese Solar Investment to Power Industrial Growth
GCL Group Eyes Solar Energy Investment in Zamfara Following High-Level Talks
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has held high level investment discussions with Chinese renewable energy giant GCL Group as part of his trade and investment mission to China, seeking to unlock large scale solar power investments capable of accelerating the state's industrialisation and economic transformation. The meeting centred on expanding economic cooperation and harnessing Zamfara's vast but largely untapped solar energy potential through sustainable electricity solutions

The engagement, which also involved Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, brought together senior executives of GCL Group, one of China's leading energy conglomerates with operations spanning thermal power, renewable energy and advanced energy technologies. During the meeting, the company expressed strong interest in investing in utility-scale solar projects in Zamfara while exploring broader partnerships in technology transfer, local content development and workforce capacity building.
Solar Investment at the Centre of Industrial Strategy
Governor Lawal said expanding access to reliable and affordable electricity remains central to Zamfara's industrialisation agenda.
The proposed partnership aims to leverage the state's abundant solar resources to improve electricity supply for households, businesses and industries while attracting new investment into manufacturing and other productive sectors. GCL Group indicated that the projects could stimulate economic activity, create employment and strengthen Zamfara's competitiveness as an investment destination.
Technical Working Group to Drive Implementation
To move the discussions towards execution, both parties agreed to establish a joint technical working group that will develop a comprehensive framework covering feasibility studies, project structuring, financing arrangements and regulatory approvals.
Following the technical assessment, GCL Group will dispatch an investment and technical delegation to Zamfara to conduct site inspections and engage with relevant stakeholders before progressing to implementation.
Implications for Housing and Infrastructure
Reliable electricity remains one of the most important enablers of housing and real estate development.
Large-scale renewable energy investments can improve the viability of residential estates, industrial parks and commercial developments by reducing dependence on diesel-powered generation and lowering operating costs. Stable electricity also enhances the attractiveness of new housing schemes, encourages manufacturing of building materials and supports mortgage-financed developments in emerging urban areas.
For Zamfara, increased power generation could create the infrastructure foundation required for new residential communities, industrial clusters and mixed-use developments that accompany economic expansion.
Industry Significance
The proposed partnership reflects a growing trend among Nigerian states to attract foreign private investment into renewable energy rather than relying solely on public funding for electricity infrastructure.
If successfully implemented, the project could demonstrate how clean energy investments can support industrial growth, improve investor confidence and accelerate regional economic development while contributing to Nigeria's broader energy transition objectives.
Outlook
The next phase of the initiative will focus on technical studies, project design and investment planning before construction decisions are made. Should the partnership progress to implementation, Zamfara could significantly expand its renewable energy capacity, strengthen infrastructure delivery and create favourable conditions for long-term investment in housing, manufacturing and commercial real estate.
