Tinubu Directs EFCC to Vacate Court Order Freezing Osun Accounts

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately return to court and vacate the order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government, saying the timing of the action could erode public confidence in the credibility of the forthcoming governorship election.

According to a State House statement, the President said he became aware that the EFCC had obtained a court order on 5 August 2026 freezing the state's accounts. While affirming the anti-graft agency's statutory powers to investigate alleged financial crimes, Tinubu said the decision to enforce the order so close to the election was inappropriate and risked creating the perception of federal interference in the democratic process.

President Cites Electoral Integrity

Tinubu emphasised that his concern was not with the EFCC's mandate but with the timing of the action.

He directed the Commission to immediately discontinue the legal process and seek the court's approval to lift the freeze, stating that government institutions must avoid actions capable of undermining confidence in free and fair elections.

Balancing Anti-Corruption and Democratic Processes

The President reiterated his administration's commitment to preserving the operational independence of anti-corruption agencies while stressing that law enforcement actions should not inadvertently cast doubt on the credibility of electoral processes.

The directive comes just days before Osun State's governorship election, making the issue politically significant.

Implications for Governance and Investment

Although the development is primarily political, it also has broader implications for public administration and investor confidence.

The freezing of government accounts can disrupt public expenditure, infrastructure delivery and ongoing development projects. Restoring access to state funds may help ensure continuity in government operations, including infrastructure and housing-related programmes financed through the state's budget.

Why It Matters

The decision underscores the importance of balancing anti-corruption enforcement with democratic governance and institutional stability.

For investors and development stakeholders, predictable governance and uninterrupted public spending remain important factors in sustaining infrastructure investment and economic activity.

Outlook

Attention will now shift to the EFCC's compliance with the presidential directive and the court's response to any application to vacate the freezing order. The development is also likely to remain a key issue in the lead-up to the Osun governorship election.
