The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared force majeure on the 132kV Birnin Kebbi–Niamey transmission line after three transmission towers collapsed at Chibike Village in Kebbi State following heavy rainfall and a windstorm.

The incident disrupted bulk electricity transmission from Nigeria to Niamey, Niger Republic, after towers T109, T110 and T111 collapsed along the transmission route. TCN said the line initially tripped at 5:38pm on August 26, 2026, while an attempt to restore it at 6:03pm failed when the line tripped again immediately. A subsequent fault-finding patrol identified the three collapsed towers.
Three Towers Collapse After Severe Weather
TCN attributed the collapse of the three towers to heavy rain and strong winds experienced in the area.
The company said its linesmen began a fault-finding patrol after the failed restoration attempt and traced the problem to the damaged infrastructure at Chibike Village.
The collapse of towers T109, T110 and T111 has interrupted the transmission of bulk electricity to Niamey through the 132kV cross-border line. TCN subsequently declared force majeure, reflecting the disruption caused by circumstances it attributed to severe weather.
Bulk Power Transmission to Niamey Affected
The damaged line serves as part of the electricity infrastructure linking Nigeria and Niger Republic.
TCN confirmed that the incident had affected bulk power transmission to Niamey and said it had mobilised personnel and resources to the affected location to begin rehabilitation work.
