The Federal Government has assured contributors to the National Housing Fund (NHF), mortgage customers and other stakeholders that customer records remain safe following the recent fire incident at the headquarters of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN).

Customer Records Protected

According to the minister, FMBN's core banking systems and customer information are securely backed up through modern digital infrastructure, ensuring that mortgage records, NHF contributions and other critical data remain intact.

He emphasised that contributors and borrowers should have confidence in the institution, noting that no customer data was lost as a result of the incident.

Services to Continue

The minister commended the swift response of emergency agencies and FMBN staff in containing the fire and protecting critical infrastructure.

He added that the bank would continue providing services while technical assessments and repairs are carried out on the affected sections of the building.

Management is also expected to review safety protocols and strengthen fire prevention measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.

Implications for Housing Finance

The reassurance is significant for millions of National Housing Fund contributors and mortgage beneficiaries who depend on FMBN for housing finance services.

By confirming the integrity of its digital records and operational systems, the bank seeks to maintain public confidence in Nigeria's primary housing finance institution and avoid disruptions to mortgage processing, loan administration and NHF contributions.

Why It Matters

FMBN plays a central role in financing affordable housing and administering the National Housing Fund. Any prolonged disruption could affect mortgage applications, loan disbursements and housing delivery.

The government's confirmation that customer data remains secure helps reassure contributors, developers and other stakeholders that housing finance operations can continue without significant interruption.

Outlook

Attention will now shift to the completion of repairs, the restoration of any affected office facilities and the implementation of additional safety measures. The incident is also likely to reinforce the importance of resilient digital infrastructure and robust disaster recovery systems across public institutions involved in housing finance.
