Lagos Housing Ministry Partners with Local Government Staff Board to Boost Home Ownership

The Lagos State Ministry of Housing has announced a new partnership with the Local Government Staff Housing Board to expand access to affordable housing for public sector employees across the state’s 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

The collaboration aims to strengthen staff welfare and institutionalise fairer housing allocations, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to inclusive home ownership and workforce stability.

Strengthening Access to Affordable Housing

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the board’s delegation in Alausa, Ikeja, Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, said the Ministry was committed to establishing a sustainable framework that would enable more local government staff to acquire homes.

According to him, the collaboration would involve reviewing the board's existing laws and operational guidelines to simplify access to housing loans for both new home ownership and property renovation.

Akinderu-Fatai noted that 20% of housing allocations in state-owned estates are already reserved for civil servants, including local government workers. He explained that while some have benefited under earlier programmes, the new partnership seeks to formalize and expand participation to ensure transparency and equity.

He further highlighted two key pathways available to eligible staff: outright purchase and the Rent-to-Own scheme, designed to cater to different financial capacities. The commissioner encouraged the board to engage council leaders and local stakeholders in identifying housing opportunities suitable for each jurisdiction.

Board Targets Broader Access for Workers

In her remarks, Mrs. Bibilomo Olusekun, Chairman of the Local Government Staff Housing Board, stated that the board currently supports over 3,000 loan beneficiaries across Lagos but intends to expand access significantly through this new collaboration.

She described the initiative as a critical step in enhancing staff welfare and morale, adding that affordable housing remains a cornerstone of long-term financial security for public employees.

Olusekun also called for additional housing allocations to local government workers on structured and affordable terms, emphasising that the partnership would help align employee welfare with the broader economic development goals of the state.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive Development

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to the partnership, describing it as vital to achieving Lagos State’s inclusive housing development agenda.

He commended the board’s leadership for its proactive engagement and assured that all proposals would be reviewed within the framework of the state’s housing policies.

“The Ministry welcomes collaborative efforts that strengthen our shared goal of ensuring that every category of worker, including those at the local government level, can access decent and affordable homes,” Toriola said.

Conclusion

The partnership between the Lagos State Ministry of Housing and the Local Government Staff Housing Board underscores a coordinated effort to close the housing gap among public servants. By combining institutional reforms, innovative financing models, and targeted allocations, the initiative seeks to promote inclusive growth and ensure that housing remains a key pillar of social and economic stability in Lagos State.
