Lagos Government Urges Tenants to Report Landlords Charging Over One Year’s Rent
The Lagos State Government has called on residents to report landlords or agents who request more than one year’s rent in advance. This move is part of the state’s efforts to regulate rental practices and promote fairness in the housing sector.
According to the state housing authority, landlords are only permitted to collect rent on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. Demanding rent payments exceeding a one-year term is considered a violation of housing guidelines.
Tenants who experience such demands are encouraged to report directly to the relevant housing agency, either by visiting their office in Alausa or submitting a complaint online. The government is also actively reviewing tenancy laws to address common issues such as caution fees and service charges that frequently create tension between landlords and tenants.
In addition to enforcement, the state is working collaboratively with property owners, developers, and real estate associations to ensure fair and responsible housing practices across the board. Residents are also advised to verify the registration status of agents and developers before signing any rental or sales agreements.
This initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to making housing more accessible, transparent, and affordable for all Lagos residents.
