Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has asked the Federal Government to include police personnel in its Renewed Hope Housing Programme
The Nigeria Police Force has asked the Federal Government to extend its Renewed Hope Housing Programme to police personnel, as the government pledges improved infrastructure and welfare for officers across the country.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu made the request during a meeting with the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, in Abuja on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The meeting focused on strengthening institutional cooperation, improving police infrastructure and addressing welfare challenges affecting serving and retired personnel.

Disu identified inadequate accommodation as one of the major infrastructure gaps confronting the force. He called for government intervention to ensure that junior officers have access to housing wherever they are deployed across the country.
The police chief said the force wanted to benefit from the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Housing Programme, which could provide an opportunity to improve living conditions for personnel and their families.
The request places police accommodation within the wider national housing debate, particularly the challenge of providing decent and affordable homes for public-sector workers.
Police Accommodation Shortage Raises Housing Concerns
The demand highlights persistent accommodation challenges within the Nigeria Police Force, where officers may be posted to locations far from their established homes and support networks.
For junior personnel, access to affordable accommodation near their duty stations can be particularly important. Housing shortages may increase their personal living expenses and create additional pressure on already stretched welfare arrangements.
The request also follows the Inspector-General's inspection of 23 police barracks in September 2026 to assess residential conditions and identify facilities requiring rehabilitation and investment.
That exercise highlighted the need for improved residential infrastructure, maintenance and sustained funding across police accommodation facilities.
The latest appeal therefore extends beyond the rehabilitation of existing barracks. It raises the possibility of providing additional housing through the Federal Government's national housing programme.
FG Pledges Improved Police Infrastructure and Welfare
Responding to the request, Gaidam reaffirmed the Ministry of Police Affairs' commitment to supporting the operational development and welfare of the Nigeria Police Force.
He said the ministry would work with the Nigerian Police Trust Fund to address personnel housing needs and improve officers' living conditions.
The minister also pledged stronger support for personnel welfare, accountability and internal disciplinary mechanisms, emphasising that a professional police institution requires adequate institutional support.
However, the government has not announced a specific housing allocation, funding commitment, number of units or construction timetable for police personnel under the Renewed Hope Housing Programme.
The extent to which the proposed collaboration will translate into additional housing provision therefore remains to be established.
What Police Housing Could Mean for Nigeria's Housing Programme
The police request highlights an important dimension of public-sector housing policy: the need to provide accommodation for essential workers whose duties require them to serve in different parts of the country.
Police officers are not the only public servants facing accommodation challenges. Teachers, healthcare workers, military personnel and other government employees also require access to decent housing, particularly in locations where they are posted for work.
Integrating police personnel into the Renewed Hope Housing Programme could expand the programme's reach beyond general housing delivery and create a more structured approach to accommodation for essential workers.
For developers and housing investors, such initiatives could also create opportunities for partnerships with government institutions, particularly where large-scale housing schemes require private-sector construction capacity and long-term financing.
However, successful delivery would depend on clear funding arrangements, land availability, project locations, eligibility criteria and a sustainable allocation framework.
Implementation Will Determine the Impact
The government's pledge and the police leadership's request come amid broader efforts to improve police welfare, including reviews of salary structures, allowances, pensions and other outstanding benefits.
In August 2026, the Ministry of Police Affairs disclosed that its review of police welfare arrangements had identified inadequate accommodation as a major challenge requiring attention. The committee also considered the need for sustainable funding mechanisms to support welfare improvements.
The latest request for inclusion in the Renewed Hope Housing Programme provides another opportunity to address that challenge.
For now, however, the proposal remains a request rather than a confirmed housing intervention. Its significance will depend on whether the Federal Government translates its commitment into approved projects, dedicated funding and measurable housing delivery for police personnel.
