The Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has stepped up inspections of ongoing projects to assess construction progress, enforce quality standards and accelerate work on priority routes.

In Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area, the inspection team reviewed reconstruction works on Godwin Omonuwa Road, Taiwo Street, Salamotu Street, Peter Agah Street and Ibeh Street. Other locations covered include Ogunnusi Road in Ojodu, Awolowo Way in Ikeja, Lanre Awolokun Road and Idowu Olaitan Street in Shomolu, and Idimu-Ikotun Road in Alimosho.

The exercise follows Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive for immediate road reconstruction and rehabilitation across the state.

Road Works Target Better Community Connectivity

The projects aim to improve movement within neighbourhoods and strengthen connections between residential districts, commercial centres and major transport routes.

Road conditions influence how easily residents reach workplaces, schools, markets and essential services. Deteriorating local roads can increase journey times, raise vehicle maintenance expenses and make daily commuting more difficult.

The LSPWC has said the works are expected to reduce congestion, improve road safety and lower transportation costs in benefiting communities.

The corporation is prioritising projects based on road deterioration, traffic importance, urgency and available resources. This means the timing of interventions will depend partly on the condition of each route and the funding and capacity available for repairs.

Dry Season Creates a Window for Construction

The corporation has sustained emergency repairs and routine maintenance during the rainy season, when persistent rainfall can complicate permanent road interventions, particularly asphalt laying.

Improved weather conditions have created a more favourable environment for reconstruction and rehabilitation, prompting the agency to intensify work across the state.

Some maintenance operations are scheduled for night-time to minimise traffic congestion and disruption to commercial activities. Safety measures are also being implemented to protect construction workers and road users.

The effectiveness of the programme will depend not only on how quickly contractors complete the work but also on whether the repaired roads can withstand traffic loads and weather conditions over time.

Why Local Roads Matter to Housing and Property

Road accessibility is an important component of residential development. A property’s practical appeal depends partly on how easily residents can reach it and connect with employment centres, public transport, schools and commercial services.

Poor roads can make otherwise affordable housing less convenient to occupy, particularly in suburban and densely populated communities where residents depend on local streets to connect with major routes.

For landlords and property managers, difficult access can affect tenant experience, deliveries, maintenance visits and the movement of service providers. Businesses operating in residential districts can also face higher operating costs when damaged roads delay workers, customers and suppliers.

Consistent road maintenance can therefore improve the functionality of existing neighbourhoods and support the broader urban environment in which housing markets operate.

However, road repairs alone do not guarantee higher property values or more affordable housing. Electricity, drainage, water supply, transport services and the cost of housing remain important factors in determining whether infrastructure improvements translate into better living conditions.

Maintenance Quality Will Determine Long-Term Benefits

The renewed inspections are intended to ensure that ongoing projects meet required standards and provide lasting benefits to residents.

The durability of road repairs will depend on construction quality, appropriate materials, drainage and regular maintenance. Without adequate drainage, water can weaken road surfaces, while poor maintenance can allow defects to return and increase the cost of future interventions.

The corporation has also urged residents, motorists and traders to keep drainage channels clear, avoid discharging wastewater onto roads and prevent petroleum products from spilling onto asphalt surfaces.

These measures can help protect road infrastructure, although responsibility for durable construction and effective public maintenance remains with the relevant authorities.

Delivery Remains the Key Test

The road rehabilitation programme covers several parts of Lagos, including Oshodi-Isolo, Ikeja, Ojodu, Shomolu and Alimosho. Its immediate objective is to improve road conditions and ease movement within the affected communities.

For the housing market, the wider significance lies in the role of dependable local infrastructure in connecting homes to jobs, services and commercial activity.

The next measure of progress will be the completion and quality of the works, alongside consistent maintenance after construction. Sustained improvements to community roads would help strengthen urban accessibility, while recurring deterioration would continue to impose costs on residents, businesses and property owners.
