Lagos Begins 35-Day Ozumba Mbadiwe Road Repairs as Traffic Diversions Take Effect
Road rehabilitation begins on Lagos’ Ozumba Mbadiwe Road
The Lagos State Government has commenced a 35-day rehabilitation of Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, introducing traffic diversions along a key corridor serving Victoria Island, Ikoyi and adjoining commercial districts.
The rehabilitation covers the section between the Adetokunbo Ademola Street/Civic Centre junction and Samuel Manuwa Street/BJ. The works began on Monday, 19 October 2026, according to the state government.

Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi said the government had mapped out alternative routes to manage traffic movement and minimise disruption while contractors work on the road.
A contraflow arrangement will operate on the Lagos-bound side between Samuel Manuwa Street and Adetokunbo Ademola Street/Civic Centre while the opposite lane undergoes rehabilitation.
Lagos Announces Alternative Routes for Motorists
The government has advised motorists travelling from Bonny Camp and Falomo towards Civic Centre and Lekki to use Adeyemo Alakija Street near Muri Okunola Park, connect to Adeola Hopewell Street and Akinbo Savage Street, and proceed through Bishop Aboyade Cole Street towards School Corner near Black Diamond and Sandfield.
Motorists travelling from Falomo towards Akin Adesola Street can use the IMB route to connect to the Coastal Road entrance through Adetokunbo Ademola Street, continue to Eko Hotel Roundabout and proceed through Ajose Adeogun and Ligali streets.
Those leaving Bonny Camp are advised to use Ahmadu Bello Way to reach Eko Hotel Roundabout through the IMB and Coastal Road entrance before continuing through the designated alternative routes.
Motorists travelling from Eko Hotel along Adetokunbo Ademola Street towards Civic Centre will be diverted through Bishop Aboyade Cole Street and School Corner towards Sandfield.
Vehicles exiting the 1004 Estate gate will also be directed to turn left or make a U-turn in front of the gate before continuing through Bishop Aboyade Cole Street.
Drivers travelling from Eko Hotel towards Falomo and Ikoyi are advised to use Sanusi Fafunwa Street to connect to Akin Adesola Street and proceed towards the ramp bridge.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will deploy officers to coordinate vehicle movement and reduce congestion during the rehabilitation.
Roadworks Target a Key Commercial Corridor
Ozumba Mbadiwe Road serves commercial properties, offices, hotels and other developments around Victoria Island and Ikoyi. Its condition and accessibility affect daily commuting, business operations and movement between important parts of Lagos.
The rehabilitation is therefore relevant beyond routine road maintenance. Reliable road infrastructure supports the movement of workers, customers, service providers and goods, particularly in business districts where traffic congestion can increase journey times and operating costs.
However, the immediate works are likely to create temporary disruption for motorists and businesses that depend on the affected corridor. The effectiveness of the diversion plan will depend on traffic management, compliance with the designated routes and the pace of construction.
Implications for Lagos Property and Urban Development
Transport infrastructure is an important factor in the accessibility and commercial appeal of urban property. Road quality, journey times and connections to business districts can influence how residents and businesses access offices, retail spaces, hotels and residential developments.
For Lagos’ property market, the rehabilitation highlights the continuing need to maintain infrastructure in established commercial districts as development and travel demand increase.
The longer-term benefits will depend on the quality and durability of the completed works. In the short term, property occupiers, businesses and commuters along the corridor will need to plan around the temporary traffic arrangements.
Outlook
The Lagos State Government has begun a 35-day rehabilitation of Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, supported by alternative routes and a contraflow arrangement intended to keep traffic moving during construction.
Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys ahead, follow traffic officials’ instructions and cooperate with the diversion measures.
The project’s immediate test will be whether the state can complete the works while limiting disruption to surrounding businesses and commuters. Its longer-term value will depend on improved road conditions and more reliable access along this important Lagos corridor.
