Lagos Partners with Community Leaders to Control Rising Rent Costs

The Lagos State Government is introducing a new approach to make housing more affordable for residents. By partnering with local council leaders across all 57 local government areas, the government plans to monitor rental practices more closely and reduce unfair fees that tenants often face.

One of the main changes is a new rule that limits the amount agents and landlords can charge for agency and legal fees. These charges must not be more than 10% of the total rent. Anything higher will now be seen as excessive and unacceptable.

The government is also encouraging landlords to accept monthly rent payments instead of demanding one or two years' payment upfront. This will make it easier for tenants, especially those with limited income, to afford housing without the heavy financial pressure that comes with paying in bulk.

By involving local community leaders, the government hopes to ensure that rental practices are fair and properly supervised. This includes both formal housing developments and informal rentals in neighborhoods and local markets.

The aim of this plan is to bring order, fairness, and transparency to the housing market. The government wants to make sure tenants are not taken advantage of and that only properly registered agents are used for rental transactions. Residents are also encouraged to report anyone who breaks the rules.

This move is expected to bring major changes to the rental system in Lagos. With better oversight and stronger community involvement, it could become easier for people to find and afford a decent place to live.
