Ibadan Airport Back in Service with First Flight After Major Upgrade

The Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan recorded its first landing on Wednesday, marking a new chapter for the facility after six months of extensive upgrades designed to meet international standards.

The flight, which touched down at 9:14 a.m., was part of advance preparations ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Oyo State on Friday for the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

According to Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, the smooth landing demonstrated the airport’s enhanced ability to safely and efficiently handle high-profile operations.
“With the presidential aircraft expected soon, this successful test marks a significant milestone and sets the pace for full operations,” Olanrewaju said.

Governor Makinde launched the airport’s modernization project in September 2024, stating that the investment would position Oyo State as a gateway to global markets. He emphasized that improved facilities would expand business and leisure travel, strengthen connectivity, and contribute to long-term economic growth.

Key elements of the upgrade included the renovation of the VIP lounge, installation of a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing system, and the acquisition of a modern fire truck to improve safety standards.

With the reopening, the state expects a boost in regional air traffic and a step forward in its broader infrastructure-driven vision for economic expansion.
