FG Delivers 100 Energy-Efficient Homes to Widows in Kaduna Under Social Housing Programme

The Federal Government has commissioned one hundred energy-efficient two-bedroom homes for widows in Rigachikun, Kaduna State, under the Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL) Social Housing Programme. The project aims to expand access to climate-resilient, affordable housing while supporting economic inclusion for vulnerable women.
FHFL designed the development as a pilot for sustainable, community-centred housing. Each unit incorporates solar power systems, climate-resilient construction, and designated areas for urban farming. The homes were built using Expanded Polystyrene System (EPS) technology, which reduces construction costs and carbon emissions by up to 40%, according to FHFL engineers.

Demola Adebise, Chairman of FHFL, said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to integrating housing delivery with social empowerment. He noted that the project pairs homeownership with livelihood training, food-processing spaces, and skills-development programmes to enhance long-term economic resilience for beneficiaries.

Community-Driven Development Backed by Government Partnership

The programme originated from a request by the widows’ cooperative, which offered their land and sought government collaboration to develop affordable homes. FHFL, working with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and the Kaduna State Government, adopted the proposal and co-developed the scheme into a replicable model for inclusive housing.

During the construction phase, officials reported that the project generated more than five hundred jobs for artisans, local contractors, and youth in surrounding communities.

Alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, said the intervention supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises inclusive growth, human capital development, and improved living standards for low-income households.

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, described the project as a demonstration of people-centred governance. He emphasized that the initiative delivers both immediate shelter benefits and broader economic value by stimulating local employment and demonstrating scalable approaches to affordable housing.

A Blueprint for Scalable, Sustainable Housing

With its combination of low-carbon construction, renewable energy integration, and livelihood support systems, the Rigachikun project introduces a framework that housing developers, policymakers, and state governments can adapt for vulnerable communities nationwide.

As FHFL advances additional projects under the Social Housing Programme, the Kaduna scheme is expected to inform future policy decisions on climate-smart, community-driven housing delivery across Nigeria.
