Federal Government Targets Mid-2026 for Completion of Abuja-Keffi Road Expansion
The Nigerian Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to finishing the expansion of the Abuja (Mararaba)–Keffi expressway by June 2026. This project is part of a larger infrastructure initiative that connects Abuja to Port Harcourt, aiming to boost regional connectivity and economic development across several states.
The Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, confirmed during a recent inspection that the expansion project—classified as Section I—covers 43.65 kilometers on each side, resulting in a total of 87.3 kilometers of dual-lane roadway. As of now, approximately 42% of the project has been completed, with consistent progress being made toward the target completion date.
Construction is being handled by a major engineering firm and has a total cost of ₦73.9 billion. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, cut down travel times, and stimulate commercial activity throughout the Federal Capital Territory as well as Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Abia, Imo, and Rivers states.
To ease traffic during construction, especially in busy areas like Mararaba, the contractors have adopted night-time work shifts and are working closely with traffic management authorities to ensure minimal disruption for road users.
The government has also emphasized that financial issues will not delay the project. All verified payment claims will be addressed promptly to keep the timeline on track.
This road expansion is a key part of the government’s broader efforts to modernize the country’s transportation infrastructure and support national economic integration.
