Wike to Launch 12 New Road Projects, Commissions Two in Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, will on Thursday, 18 September 2025, flag off the construction of 12 new road projects across Abuja and commission two completed access roads, as part of a broader infrastructure and urban renewal agenda.

According to a statement by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, the new projects will also deliver hybrid solar-powered streetlights under the Light Up Abuja programme. The initiative will cover key districts including Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse, Garki, Katampe, Jabi, Gudu, the Central Business District, and the Airport Expressway.

In addition to the 12 new road projects, the minister will commission access roads in Sector Centre B by Dakibiyu District, as well as newly completed Roads ILS 11 (Esther Bali Street) and MAR 24 (Kez Udezue Street) in Mabushi District.

Key Projects Under the Programme

The works scheduled for flag-off between September 18 and October 16 include:

  • Construction of access roads to the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates site in Karsana West.

  • A bypass road linking the Airport’s second runway from Bill Clinton Drive to Tunga Madaki Settlement, featuring a four-span bridge.

  • Rehabilitation of the 15-kilometre Old Keffi Road, from Kado Village to Dei-Dei Junction.

  • Provision of engineering infrastructure to outstanding layouts within Guzape District.

Wike also confirmed plans to construct official residences for the heads of major courts in Abuja, complementing broader efforts to improve institutional infrastructure in the capital.

Broader Development Agenda

The announcement follows a series of projects recently launched by the FCT administration, including water expansion schemes in Bwari and Karu, a sports centre in Kafe District, a Magistrate Court in Jabi, and the reconstruction of Karu Road.

By integrating road construction with energy-efficient lighting, housing access, and judicial infrastructure, the administration seeks to reinforce Abuja’s position as a modern and functional federal capital.

Outlook

The projects underscore Abuja’s continued push for urban renewal and infrastructure upgrades, with direct implications for investors, developers, and residents. As works commence, the challenge will be ensuring timely delivery, durability, and alignment with the city’s long-term master plan.
