Lagos State Government Takes Action Against Estate Mismanagement
The Lagos State Government has firmly cautioned occupants of its government-owned estates to comply with the maintenance requirements specified in their allocation letters. Officials are increasingly alarmed by a rising trend of non-compliance, which they believe is jeopardizing the performance and longevity of communal infrastructure.
Recent submissions to the Ministry of Housing have documented several breaches, including electricity pilferage, neglect of communal facilities, and the non-payment of required estate charges. Such infractions not only degrade living conditions but also endanger residents and compromise the integrity of estate amenities.
During a recent inspection at the Lateef Kayode Jakande Estate in Igando, Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, discovered cases of energy theft, noting that numerous residents had illegally bypassed their electrical connections. He denounced this behavior, making it clear that any actions undermining vital infrastructure—such as water supply, electricity, and other shared services—would not be tolerated.
Furthermore, Akinderu-Fatai criticized those who interfered with apartments that had been sealed off due to previous violations, warning that such actions would invite strict penalties. Despite some residents requesting leniency, he maintained that repeated breaches would face firm enforcement.
The Commissioner also reminded residents that government-owned estates are designed to offer a comfortable living environment, complete with essential facilities maintained by state-appointed managers. He urged all occupants to collaborate with resident representatives to ensure that these shared amenities are properly cared for.
“These estates are intended to provide structured and decent living spaces. Upholding the established rules is key to preserving the quality and sustainability of these communities,” he emphasized.
In reiterating its commitment, the Lagos State Government vowed to enforce compliance and ensure that government-owned estates remain well-organized, fully functional, and conducive to the welfare of all residents.
