FCT Minister Wike Promises Clean Water and Development Projects for Zuba

Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to provide clean water to Zuba community and expand infrastructure across Gwagwalada Area Council in Abuja. The commitment came during a stakeholder visit to the council following the recent FCT area council elections.

The minister stated that addressing basic infrastructure gaps including potable water supply and critical public works remains a priority for the FCT Administration as it seeks to improve living conditions in satellite communities around the capital.

Commitment to Resolve Zuba’s Water Supply Challenge

During the visit, Wike expressed concern over the absence of reliable potable water in Zuba, a satellite town located along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor. He assured residents that the administration would intervene to resolve the problem.

The minister said the issue would be treated as a priority, emphasising that access to clean water is a fundamental public service that must be available to residents of the Federal Capital Territory.

Zuba serves as a key residential and commercial gateway to Abuja, with a growing population driven by urban expansion and migration to satellite towns where housing costs are comparatively lower.

Infrastructure Expansion Across Gwagwalada

Beyond the water intervention, the FCT minister pledged broader infrastructure development across communities in Gwagwalada Area Council. The planned projects include improvements to local roads, bridges, and other public infrastructure required to support economic activity and population growth in the area.

Wike noted that the FCT Administration would work closely with the newly elected council leadership to identify and prioritise projects with the greatest impact on residents.

He advised local authorities to focus on high-priority development projects rather than attempting to address all infrastructure challenges simultaneously, citing resource constraints and the need for efficient project delivery.

Collaboration with Newly Elected Local Leadership

The minister commended residents of Gwagwalada for their participation in the recent area council elections and congratulated Chairman-elect Kasim Mohammed for his victory. Wike described him as a hardworking leader and pledged the FCT Administration’s support for the council’s development agenda.

According to the minister, collaboration between the federal administration and local authorities will be essential for delivering infrastructure improvements and enhancing service delivery in the area.

Recognition of Traditional Institutions

During the visit, Wike also approved the upgrade of the Gbagyi traditional leadership in Gwagwalada West to a third-class chiefdom, following a request from local stakeholders.

The move forms part of broader efforts by the FCT Administration to strengthen traditional institutions and improve community engagement across Abuja’s area councils.

Implications for Urban Development in Abuja

Satellite communities such as Zuba and Gwagwalada have experienced rapid population growth in recent years as Abuja’s urban expansion pushes residential development beyond the city centre. The pressure has increased demand for infrastructure, water supply systems, road networks, and public services.

The FCT Administration’s planned interventions are expected to support urban development, improve service delivery, and enhance economic activity in Abuja’s peripheral communities, which play an increasingly important role in accommodating the capital’s expanding population.

Outlook

The commitments announced during the visit signal the administration’s intention to prioritise basic infrastructure and service delivery in Abuja’s satellite towns.

If implemented effectively, the proposed water supply and infrastructure projects could improve living conditions in Zuba and strengthen development outcomes across the wider Gwagwalada Area Council.
