Wike Directs Extension of Airport Road to Enhance Connectivity

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate extension of the Airport Road to Tunga Madaki and surrounding communities. The directive aims to broaden road connectivity within the capital, opening up underserved satellite towns and alleviating traffic congestion across major transport corridors.

Strategic Connectivity and On-Site Inspection

During an on-the-spot assessment of ongoing infrastructure projects on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, the Minister inspected newly constructed segments designed to link the Airport corridor with the Tunga Madaki axis. In a statement issued by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, the Minister emphasised that these projects are critical to the FCT Administration's (FCTA) strategy of integrating rural communities into the urban economic fold.

Beyond the immediate linkage to Tunga Madaki, Wike further instructed that construction work commence on extending the route toward Zuba. This extension is expected to serve as a vital bypass and alternative route, facilitating smoother movement for residents and commercial vehicles entering and exiting the city centre.

Economic Impact and Infrastructure Policy

The Minister underscored that road connectivity remains a central pillar of the current administration’s agenda. According to Wike, the visible transformation of Abuja’s infrastructure is a direct result of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s focus on sustainable urban development.

“Ongoing projects across the FCT, including road construction, rehabilitation, and expansion, are aimed at decongesting the city centre while ensuring inclusive development for communities on the outskirts of the capital,” Wike stated.

The Minister also issued a stern warning to contractors, asserting that the FCTA would maintain rigorous monitoring to ensure high-quality delivery and adherence to timelines. He reiterated that the administration would not tolerate the abandonment of assigned projects.

Community Response and Forward Outlook

The announcement has been met with positive feedback from residents of the Tunga Madaki and Zuba axes. Stakeholders noted that the improved access routes are anticipated to:

  • Significantly reduce travel time to the city centre.

  • Enhance security through improved accessibility for law enforcement.

  • Stimulate commercial activities in previously isolated satellite regions.

This road expansion initiative is part of a broader infrastructure roadmap by the FCTA to modernise Abuja’s transport network. By prioritising the linkage of satellite towns to major economic corridors, the administration seeks to reposition the FCT as a more functional, accessible, and inclusive metropolis.
