FG Resumes Construction on Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway with Increased Momentum

The Federal Government has announced the resumption of full-scale construction activities on the Cross River and Akwa Ibom sections of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. This development, confirmed via the official Presidency account on X, marks a significant surge in the momentum of the 700km landmark infrastructure project.

Reports from the project site indicate that a massive deployment of heavy earth-moving equipment—including haulage trucks, graders, rollers, and pavers—is currently active across multiple work fronts. According to official statements, visible progress has been recorded over several kilometers in a short duration, underscoring the government's commitment to the project's timeline.

Engineering Standards and Supervision

The construction is being executed under the leadership of the Minister of Works, Senator (Engr.) David Nweze Umahi, CON. The Federal Government emphasized that work is being carried out with strict adherence to engineering specifications and consistent on-site supervision to ensure the highway meets international quality benchmarks.

As a central component of the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is designed to meet global standards. The project is expected to:

  • Enhance Regional Integration: Connecting nine coastal states to foster unity and easier movement.

  • Boost Economic Competitiveness: Streamlining trade routes and reducing logistics costs.

  • Contribute to National Development: Serving as a catalyst for industrial growth and tourism along the coastal corridor.

Project Status and Vision

The resumption of work along the Cross River/Akwa Ibom axis follows the successful completion and temporary opening of Section 1 in Lagos earlier in the month. Once completed, the highway will provide a world-class transportation link designed to transform Nigeria's economic landscape and strengthen regional trade ties.
