Emergency Response Limits Damage After Hotel Fire in Abuja

A late-night fire outbreak has destroyed property worth approximately ₦350 million at De Bently Hotel in Abuja after flames engulfed the four-storey building located in the Utako district of Nigeria’s capital.

According to the Federal Fire Service, the incident occurred on 9 March 2026, prompting an emergency response from firefighting teams who were deployed shortly after the alarm was raised.

Authorities said firefighters arrived at the scene within minutes and immediately began containment efforts to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings.

Emergency Response Contained the Blaze

The Federal Fire Service reported that the fire was first recorded at approximately 8:28 p.m., with emergency responders arriving at the scene by 8:38 p.m. to commence firefighting operations.

Firefighters deployed multiple water tankers and suppression equipment to bring the situation under control. Their efforts successfully prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining structures within the densely developed neighbourhood.

The operation was coordinated by senior officials of the fire service, who supervised emergency response teams throughout the incident.

Significant Assets Saved

Despite the scale of the blaze, emergency responders were able to salvage a large portion of the property within the hotel complex.

Officials estimated that the hotel facility contained property valued at approximately ₦1 billion. Of that amount, firefighters managed to save ₦650 million worth of assets, while the remaining ₦350 million was destroyed by the fire.

Authorities also confirmed that no casualties or injuries were recorded during the incident.

Possible Gas Explosion Suspected

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been triggered by a gas explosion, although officials emphasised that the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.

Police patrol teams and additional emergency units were deployed to secure the site and assist firefighters during the containment operation.

Investigators from the Federal Fire Service have begun examining the building and surrounding facilities to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident.
