Housing Minister reiterates FG’s commitment to delivering affordable housing
The Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to bridging Nigeria’s housing deficit, promising to review the pricing of existing government housing projects to ensure they remain accessible to the average citizen.
The Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, made this disclosure during an official assessment visit to the National Housing Project (NHP) Estate located in Laminga, Jos East Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Speaking on the administration's housing agenda, Ata emphasized that housing remains a top priority under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s "Renewed Hope" mandate. He noted that the Ministry is working tirelessly to increase the volume of available housing stock while ensuring that the cost of acquisition does not alienate the intended beneficiaries.
Price Review for Dilapidated Units During the visit, the Jos East Local Government expressed interest in a bulk purchase of housing units within the Laminga estate. However, local authorities requested a downward review of the initial pricing to account for the current state of the buildings and the costs required for maintenance and repairs.
Responding to the request, Minister Ata assured that the Ministry would evaluate the estate's face value.
"The Ministry will offer the houses to the local government based on current face value, taking into consideration some observed dilapidation," the Minister stated. "We will review the initial pricing and address it accordingly to ensure these units are put to use for the benefit of the people."
Boosting the Local Economy The NHP Housing Estate in Laminga is expected to serve as a catalyst for socio-economic growth in the region. Beyond providing shelter, the completion and occupation of the estate are projected to boost the local economy and improve the living standards of residents in Jos East.
The Federal Controller of Housing in Plateau State, Bldr. Emmanuel Attah, who accompanied the Minister, confirmed that the local government is eager to take over the units to defray maintenance costs and prevent further deterioration of the infrastructure.
A Commitment to 'Renewed Hope' This assessment visit underscores the Ministry’s proactive approach to managing the National Housing Programme. By addressing pricing concerns and facilitating bulk acquisitions by local governments, the Federal Government aims to accelerate the delivery of its affordable housing units across the federation.
The Minister’s visit concluded with a reaffirmation that the administration remains focused on providing sustainable housing solutions that promote the socio-economic well-being of all Nigerians.
