The Federal Government has announced plans to demolish 50 per cent of the Iddo Bridge in Lagos starting next week to facilitate essential reconstruction works. This decision follows technical assessments indicating that the integrity of the bridge section has been compromised, necessitating a complete replacement of the affected spans. The Federal Ministry of Works confirmed that the intervention is part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety and longevity of critical infrastructure connecting the Lagos mainland.

Technical Scope and Demolition Strategy

According to the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, the demolition is a strategic necessity due to the advanced state of deterioration of the bridge’s substructure. The project involves removing half of the bridge's width while maintaining the remaining portion for controlled traffic flow. This phased approach aims to balance the urgency of reconstruction with the need to minimize total closure of this vital transport link.

The reconstruction process will involve the installation of new reinforced concrete piers and a modernized deck system. This upgrade is expected to enhance the bridge's load-bearing capacity, ensuring it meets the demands of current and future vehicular traffic volumes.

Traffic Management and Alternative Routes

To mitigate the anticipated gridlock, the Federal Ministry of Works is collaborating with the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). Authorities have outlined a comprehensive traffic management plan that includes the deployment of personnel to manage diversions.

Motorists are advised to utilize alternative routes such as the Eko Bridge and Carter Bridge to reduce the pressure on the Iddo axis. The Ministry emphasized that while the partial demolition will inevitably cause delays, the remaining half of the bridge will be reinforced to handle two-way traffic during the construction period. Signs and directional indicators will be positioned at strategic points to guide commuters throughout the duration of the works.

Infrastructure Maintenance and Economic Impact

The reconstruction of the Iddo Bridge is critical for the economic productivity of the Lagos Mainland and its environs. As a key link to major commercial hubs, any structural failure of the bridge would result in significant economic losses. This intervention reflects the Federal Government's commitment to proactive infrastructure maintenance rather than reactive repairs.

The project is funded under the national emergency bridge repair programme. By addressing the structural deficits of the Iddo Bridge now, the government aims to prevent a total collapse that would necessitate a multi-year closure and far higher reconstruction costs.

The reconstruction of the Iddo Bridge represents a critical intervention in the Lagos transport network. While the phased demolition will temporarily impact commuting patterns, the long-term resolution of height clearance issues and structural defects is expected to reduce recurring maintenance costs and improve the overall efficiency of the Lagos logistics corridor.
