Uyo Airport Granted International Status: First Global Flight Expected Q1 2026
The Federal Government has formally elevated Uyo Airport (Victor Attah International Airport) to international operational status, enabling it to receive and process global passenger flights. The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during an official visit to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, where he met with Governor Umo Eno.
Upgrades and Facilities Position Airport for Global Operations
According to Minister Keyamo, the airport already possesses essential infrastructure to support international traffic, including a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility and a runway exceeding three kilometres, suitable for larger aircraft. A multi-agency team comprising Customs, NCAA, FAAN, and NiMet has been established to oversee the transition from domestic to international operations.
“The airport has the necessary facilities to operate internationally, and regulatory preparations are underway to commence full operations,” Keyamo stated.
State Support and Complementary Infrastructure
Governor Umo Eno welcomed the announcement, emphasising state-level initiatives to complement the airport’s upgrade. Plans include the construction of a cargo terminal, staff residential facilities, and ancillary infrastructure to support the airport ecosystem. The government aims to see the first international flight depart by the end of Q1 2026, enhancing regional connectivity and economic opportunities.
Strategic Significance of Uyo Airport
Originally opened in 2009 and renamed in 2018 to honour former Governor Obong Victor Attah, Uyo Airport serves as a critical hub for the Niger Delta region. The international designation is expected to boost trade, tourism, and investment, supporting Akwa Ibom State’s broader economic development strategy.
The upgrade aligns with federal priorities to strengthen regional aviation capacity, facilitate global trade links, and enhance passenger and cargo traffic handling standards across Nigeria.

Regulatory approvals remain ongoing, with government agencies finalising compliance requirements and operational protocols. Once fully operational, Uyo Airport will offer direct international connectivity, providing strategic access for businesses, investors, and travellers, and positioning the region as a competitive aviation and trade hub.
