Umahi Warns Edo Road Contractors of Contract Termination Over Delays

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has cautioned contractors handling federal road projects in Edo State that any firm failing to meet agreed timelines will face contract termination. Umahi issued the warning during an inspection tour of ongoing federal infrastructure projects across the state, accompanied by Governor Monday Okpebholo.

The inspection covered several major projects, including the Ekpoma section of the Benin–Ekpoma–Auchi Expressway, a critical corridor linking Edo to northern Nigeria, as well as sections of the Benin–Asaba Expressway and the Ramat Park flyover in Benin City.

While commending contractors who have demonstrated satisfactory progress, Umahi criticised others for what he described as “unacceptable performance.” He emphasised that the Ministry of Works would no longer tolerate inefficiency or substandard delivery on federal projects.

“The era of abandoned or poorly executed projects is over. Contractors must deliver quality work within the stipulated timeframe,” the Minister stated.

Collaboration with Edo State Government

Governor Okpebholo, who has initiated repair works on several federal roads within the state, expressed appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s continued support in the area of infrastructure renewal. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to complementing federal efforts through timely interventions.

In response, Umahi praised the governor’s proactive approach and officially handed over responsibility for the Ewu–Agbor carriageway to the Edo State Government for execution under a collaborative arrangement.

Infrastructure Renewal Drive

The inspection concluded at the Ramat Park flyover project in Benin City a major infrastructure initiative aimed at decongesting traffic in one of the state’s busiest intersections. Umahi reiterated that the Ministry’s focus remains on timely, quality, and sustainable infrastructure delivery across all regions.

Conclusion:

The Minister’s warning underscores the federal government’s renewed emphasis on accountability and project discipline within the construction sector. As Nigeria accelerates its infrastructure renewal agenda, the Edo inspection reflects a broader policy stance rewarding efficiency while enforcing strict consequences for non-performance.
