President Bola Tinubu Extends Surveyor-General’s Tenure to Strengthen Land and Geospatial Reforms
President Bola Tinubu has approved a two-year tenure extension for the Surveyor-General of the Federation, Abdulganiyu Adebomehin, effective January 5, 2026. The decision is aimed at consolidating ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s land administration and geospatial data systems.
According to a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the extension aligns with Tinubu’s agenda to modernize land governance, enhance geospatial data infrastructure, and deepen reforms within the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF), which now operates under the Presidency.
The President’s approval is expected to provide continuity for several strategic projects initiated under Adebomehin’s leadership, including the digitisation of land records, national mapping exercises, and geospatial data support for major infrastructure projects. These initiatives are integral to improving land use planning, mitigating disputes, and fostering sustainable development.
Focus on Digital Land Administration and Inter-Agency Coordination
Appointed in January 2022 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, Adebomehin has led OSGOF through a period of transformation, driving the adoption of digital technologies in land documentation and mapping. His administration has played a crucial role in supporting federal projects such as erosion control, highway development, and land reclamation efforts.
Onanuga noted that the extended tenure would enable Adebomehin to complete critical reforms and strengthen collaboration between federal and state mapping agencies to ensure consistency in spatial data collection and usage nationwide.
Reinforcing Policy and Environmental Oversight
Under his leadership, OSGOF has also taken steps to enforce compliance with land use regulations. In August, the office ordered the demolition of unauthorized structures along Nigeria’s shorelines and directed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to submit all shoreline development approvals for central coordination a move aimed at improving environmental management and coastal mapping.
Conclusion
Adebomehin’s renewed tenure is expected to further Nigeria’s transition towards a data-driven approach to land governance, boosting transparency, efficiency, and economic planning. The development signals the Tinubu administration’s continued prioritisation of geospatial intelligence as a foundation for national development and infrastructure growth.
