Over 2 Million Jobs Targeted as FG Plans 77,400 New Homes Nationwide
In a bold move to tackle unemployment and deepen access to affordable housing, the Federal Government has announced the construction of 77,400 housing units under its Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme. The initiative is expected to generate over 2 million jobs across the country.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, revealed this during a session with the House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat at the National Assembly in Abuja. According to the Minister, the government plans to build 100 housing units in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, with at least 27 jobs created per site—ranging from skilled artisans to labourers, and suppliers in the housing value chain.
“This initiative is more than a housing project; it is an economic strategy aimed at reviving local economies, creating jobs, and uplifting vulnerable populations,” said Dangiwa.
The homes are primarily intended for low-income earners, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and other vulnerable groups who have long been priced out of the formal housing market.
A Sustainable Approach to Affordable Housing
To finance the project, the Ministry intends to leverage the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund, pending final approval by President Bola Tinubu. Dangiwa also disclosed plans to propose a National Social Housing Fund Bill, which would help institutionalise long-term funding for affordable housing delivery in Nigeria.
In a show of legislative backing, Chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Habitat, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, assured the Minister of the committee’s full support. He emphasized the importance of the programme in bridging the housing deficit and fostering nationwide economic inclusion.
