Ondo Governor Unveils Expansion of Strategic Coastal Highway to Drive Economic Progress
In celebration of his first 100 days in office, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa formally kicked off the conversion of the 27.5-kilometre Igbokoda–Okitipupa Road into a dual carriageway. This milestone infrastructure effort is anticipated to bolster connectivity and stimulate business activities throughout the Southern Senatorial District.
During the launch ceremony in Igbokoda, Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized that his administration is committed to nurturing an environment conducive to development, reinforcing Ondo State’s appeal as both an investment destination and tourist hub. He remarked, “Enhancing this corridor is more than just improving travel—it’s a strategic move to unlock the untapped potential of our coastal communities.”
Aiyedatiwa highlighted how the widened road will streamline transportation logistics for the forthcoming Ondo Deep Seaport, a project that secured federal backing in the closing stages of the Buhari administration. Once operational, the seaport is projected to play a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy initiatives.
“Our government is planning ahead,” the governor added. “By laying this foundation now, we prepare for the opportunities that our coastline and seaport will bring. It’s through durable infrastructure like this that we ready ourselves for tomorrow.”
Linking inland regions to the coastline is central to Ondo’s long-term economic strategy. The dualisation aligns with national objectives to strengthen maritime commerce and position Nigeria as a leading logistics hub in West Africa.
Engr. Abiola Olawoye, the governor’s Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing, outlined the project specifics: a 27.5-kilometre stretch designed with sufficient setbacks and an overall width that can accommodate rising traffic volumes in coming years.
Local residents and business leaders at the event voiced their enthusiasm, noting that smoother transportation will not only reduce travel time but also draw new investors and enhance livelihoods along the route.
