Minister Atah Urges National Unity as Nigeria–US Diplomatic Tension Deepens
Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Yusuf Atah, has called for calm and collective restraint as Nigeria navigates rising diplomatic tension with the United States following recent allegations of human rights violations and religious discrimination. Atah addressed journalists in Kano on Saturday after returning from the Lesser Hajj, emphasizing that Nigeria must avoid internal divisions while the government works to de-escalate the situation.
Atah urged citizens, particularly communities in Northern Nigeria, to refrain from inflammatory statements or actions that may aggravate the diplomatic rift. He stressed that coordinated restraint is essential for preserving domestic stability at a time of heightened scrutiny from international actors.
According to the minister, divisive commentary circulating across local and international platforms risks fuelling tensions at home. “We must not allow external narratives or political interpretations to divide us,” he told reporters, noting that Nigeria’s cohesion has historically depended on its ability to negotiate difficult periods through dialogue and collective faith.
Managing Domestic Sentiment in a Sensitive Moment
The minister’s intervention comes as public sentiment intensifies over remarks attributed to US political figures, including statements perceived as threatening or undiplomatic toward Nigeria. While government officials continue diplomatic engagements, Atah warned that internal reactions could inadvertently escalate matters.
He encouraged citizens to prioritize national interest over emotionally driven commentary, urging them to approach the situation with “wisdom and restraint rather than anger.” According to him, avoiding provocative rhetoric remains key to preventing tension in regions already confronting security and socio-political pressure.
Atah also called on religious leaders across Islamic and Christian communities to guide public sentiment responsibly. He emphasised that clerics play a critical role in mitigating polarisation by promoting messages of peace, unity, and national cohesion.
“Our clerics must lead with wisdom,” Atah said, adding that spiritual institutions have historically served as stabilising forces during national crises. He encouraged faith leaders to shift public focus towards prayer, reconciliation, and support for ongoing diplomatic resolutions.
Support for the Presidency and a Call for National Confidence
Reaffirming confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, Atah said the administration remains committed to protecting national interests while maintaining constructive relations with global partners. He also expressed confidence that the country will emerge from the present challenge stronger and more united.
“The President needs our goodwill as government channels every diplomatic pathway available,” he said. He added that Nigerians must “believe in the country again” and continue to work collaboratively for peace and development.
Conclusion
Atah’s call for unity highlights the federal government’s broader strategy to manage both international negotiations and domestic reactions as Nigeria responds to evolving diplomatic pressures. The minister’s message underscores the importance of social stability, responsible communication, and national cohesion during moments of geopolitical strain. Observers will be watching how government engagements unfold in the coming days, particularly as public discourse and international scrutiny continue to evolve
