Lagos Suspends Admiralty Way–Ajah Road Works to Ease Holiday Traffic, Resumes January 2026

The Lagos State Government will suspend rehabilitation works along the Eti-Osa/Lekki/Epe Expressway from the Admiralty Way junction to the Ajah Jubilee Bridge effective Thursday, December four, to reduce congestion and ensure smoother mobility during the peak holiday travel season. The suspension will last until mid-January 2026, when contractors will return to commence the project’s second phase.

The decision follows a joint assessment by senior officials from the Ministry of Transportation, the Office of Infrastructure, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the project’s contractor, CRCC.

Government Targets Traffic Relief Ahead of Holiday Travel Surge

Announcing the directive, the Lagos State Government said the temporary pause will ease gridlock, shorten travel times, and allow residents and businesses to move more freely during the festive period. According to the state, the intervention is intended to reduce stress on commuters and minimise productivity losses arising from prolonged congestion along one of Lagos’ busiest corridors.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, acknowledged the disruptions caused by ongoing works but emphasised the need to balance road rehabilitation with the public’s demand for mobility. He confirmed that completed sections of the corridor including the Chevron intersection will reopen fully to traffic by the close of business on Thursday.

Critical Corridor With High Economic Value

Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Engr. Olufemi Daramola highlighted the expressway’s strategic value as a gateway linking residential estates, commercial hubs, and emerging industrial zones across Lagos’ eastern flank. He noted that enhanced traffic management frameworks will accompany the resumption of construction in January to limit disruptions and safeguard the commuter experience.

The expressway’s rehabilitation is part of a broader upgrading programme along the Lekki–Ajah axis, which has faced earlier delays. The wider corridor initially scheduled for an 8 month reconstruction from November 15, 2025, to July 15, 2026, remains postponed pending a new commencement date.

Context: Previous Delays and Broader Corridor Rehabilitation

The temporary halt on the Admiralty Way–Ajah Jubilee Bridge section comes after earlier postponements affecting the Lekki–Ajah corridor more broadly. The Lagos State Government had deferred major sections of the planned reconstruction to ensure better sequencing of works and reduce pressure on adjoining routes that already experience heavy daily traffic.

These adjustments signal the state’s acknowledgment of seasonal mobility patterns and its attempt to mitigate gridlock during the December peak, when vehicle volumes traditionally surge.

What Commuters Should Expect

Construction stops on December four; resumes mid-January 2026.

  1. Chevron intersection and other completed segments reopen immediately.

  2. Temporary improvements in travel time expected throughout December.

  3. Full-scale construction works will continue in early 2026 with enhanced traffic controls.

Outlook

The Lagos State Government’s decision underscores a strategic effort to manage urban mobility during a high-demand travel period while maintaining momentum on a major infrastructure upgrade. The expressway remains a critical component of Lagos’ long-term transport modernisation agenda, and the phased approach suggests a prioritisation of both commuter well-being and project continuity. With works set to resume in January, investors, logistics operators, and residents should anticipate intensified construction activity in early 2026 as the state advances its road infrastructure pipeline.
