Lagos State Government Begins Fresh Enumeration for Oworonshoki Demolition Victims
The Lagos State Government has launched a new enumeration exercise for residents affected by the recent demolitions in Oworonshoki, Kosofe Local Government Area, as part of its ongoing urban regeneration efforts.
The Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA) conducted the latest enumeration on Monday at the Oloworo Palace, focusing on residents and property owners who were not captured during the initial assessment and compensation phase.
According to LASURA spokesperson Adedeji Akolade, the current enumeration aims to provide a comprehensive record of affected households for inclusion in the next compensation round.
“What we did today was to carry out the enumeration for the second batch. We are counting the number of property owners affected by the demolition to determine the extent of damage. Over 100 people were listed today, and the process continues tomorrow,” Akolade said.
The renewed data collection follows another round of demolitions that took place in the Coker and Ojulari areas on October 26, 2025 shortly after the government confirmed that 79 property owners had received compensation.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Compensation
LASURA’s General Manager, Oladimeji Animashaun, who was present at the exercise alongside senior directors, traditional leaders, and community representatives, commended affected residents for their cooperation throughout the process.
He also reaffirmed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to ensuring that all verified victims of the regeneration exercise receive appropriate compensation.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu deserves commendation for fulfilling his commitment to compensate residents affected by the regeneration exercise,” Animashaun stated.
Animashaun further acknowledged the contributions of the Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, and the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Gbolahan Oki, for their roles in ensuring transparent and equitable compensation.
Urban Renewal and Inclusive Development
The Oworonshoki regeneration project is part of Lagos State’s broader strategy to improve infrastructure and enhance living conditions in blighted communities. However, it has also prompted calls for greater inclusivity and transparency in compensation procedures to protect vulnerable residents displaced by redevelopment initiatives.
By conducting a new enumeration, the government aims to close data gaps from the initial phase and strengthen public trust in its urban renewal framework.
Looking Ahead
The enumeration is expected to continue through the week, with LASURA planning to release updated figures once verification is complete. Officials have reiterated that compensation payments for the new batch of verified property owners will follow immediately after the review process.
