Lagos Secures 4,000 Hectares for Ibeju-Lekki Airport as NCAA Reaffirms Support

The Lagos State Government has secured a 4,000-hectare site for the proposed Ibeju-Lekki International Airport, marking a major step toward realising the long-awaited project. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reaffirmed its regulatory support, emphasizing compliance with aviation standards as preparations advance.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the land acquisition during a joint meeting with NCAA officials in Lagos, noting that the project aligns with the state’s 2007 Master Plan. The plan identified the need for a second airport to accommodate the city’s population growth, industrial expansion, and rising air traffic demand.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the new airport will complement the Lekki Free Zone, the Dangote Refinery, and the Deep Sea Port all major infrastructure projects transforming Lagos’ eastern corridor into a regional economic hub. He described the airport as “a strategic investment in the state’s long-term mobility and logistics framework,” adding that it would enhance Lagos’ position as West Africa’s commercial gateway.

NCAA Outlines Regulatory Requirements

NCAA Director-General, Capt. Chris Najomo, confirmed federal approval for the project but reiterated that the Lagos State Government must comply with statutory aviation procedures. He stated that a declaration of intent must be submitted to the NCAA at least 180 days before construction begins, enabling the agency to provide technical and safety guidance.

Najomo added that adherence to global aviation standards is non-negotiable, ensuring the airport meets international safety, design, and operational benchmarks. He assured stakeholders that the NCAA will continue to collaborate with the state to ensure timely execution of the project.

Economic and Infrastructure Significance

Industry analysts view the proposed Ibeju-Lekki Airport as a critical infrastructure catalyst expected to boost investment inflows, tourism, and logistics in Lagos’ rapidly industrialising corridor. The development could ease congestion at Murtala Muhammed International Airport while improving accessibility for businesses within the Lekki industrial zone.

If completed, the project will expand Lagos’ aviation infrastructure footprint and support the state’s broader ambition to position itself as a global investment and transport hub.

Conclusion

With land acquisition completed and federal backing confirmed, the Ibeju-Lekki Airport project moves closer to implementation. The coming months will be crucial, as the Lagos State Government and NCAA collaborate to finalise regulatory clearances and align the project with international aviation standards.
