FG Reconstitutes National Building Code Advisory Committee, Names 21-Member Panel
The Federal Government has reconstituted and inaugurated the National Building Code Advisory Committee (NBCAC) to strengthen building-standards enforcement and curb structural failures nationwide. The ceremony was performed in Abuja by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, with the committee mandated to review the National Building Code, guide technical sub-committees across project phases, and recommend reforms to the Minister. The committee will serve a three-year term, renewable once, and provide quarterly progress reports.
Why this matters
The NBCAC is central to harmonising regulations that govern design, construction, and maintenance standards. Effective code enforcement influences development risk, insurance pricing, lender confidence, and state-level domestication of the Code. The Ministry positions this reconstitution as part of a broader push to reduce building collapses and improve safety outcomes in the built environment.
Mandate and operating framework
According to the Housing Ministry, the NBCAC will:
Periodically review and update the National Building Code.
Recommend and guide specialised technical sub-committees covering pre-design, design, construction, and post-construction stages.
Submit quarterly reports and meet at least twice annually, reporting to the Ministry.
