FCT Government Launches Housing Projects for Judicial Officers in Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has unveiled a series of housing projects targeting judicial officers in Abuja, aiming to address accommodation deficits and enhance the operational efficiency of the judiciary. The announcement was made by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, during the Special Court Session marking the 2025/2026 Legal Year of the Court of Appeal.
According to Minister Wike, the FCTA has allocated fresh budgetary provisions for constructing additional residential units for High Court judges. The initiative is part of a broader effort to provide well-equipped housing for judicial officers, ensuring that they can perform their duties without disruptions caused by inadequate living conditions.
“Access to decent housing is essential for judicial officers to execute their responsibilities effectively. These interventions are aligned with the administration’s commitment to strengthening the justice sector,” Wike stated.
The minister emphasised that improving living conditions is integral to the judiciary’s overall performance and independence. The projects form part of a holistic approach to modernise court infrastructure and support facilities across the FCT.
Complementary Judicial Infrastructure Developments
In addition to residential housing, the FCTA has made progress on other critical infrastructure projects for the judiciary. Wike highlighted the issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy for the Supreme Court’s permanent site and the commencement of perimeter fencing to secure the complex against encroachment.
Ongoing projects include:
Residential quarters for Heads of Courts.
Construction of a new Magistrate Court Complex in Jabi District.
Staff housing for the Nigerian Law School.
Design and development of new Court of Appeal and Federal High Court facilities in Abuja.
These developments are designed to alleviate pressure on ageing facilities and expand access to justice for residents of the FCT.
Supporting Judicial Reforms and Digitalisation
Minister Wike reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to digitising court processes, reducing reliance on manual operations, and accelerating case resolution. The housing projects are seen as complementary to these reforms, creating an environment where judicial officers can focus on efficient service delivery.
The minister attributed the progress to the decisive intervention of President Bola Tinubu, noting that these measures enhance confidence in the judiciary and reinforce operational independence.
Conclusion
The FCTA’s housing initiatives for judicial officers represent a strategic investment in the justice sector. By addressing accommodation deficits, modernising court infrastructure, and promoting digitalisation, the administration is creating conditions that support judicial efficiency and strengthen governance in the Federal Capital Territory. These projects are expected to improve service delivery, ensure operational stability for judicial officers, and enhance public access to justice across Abuja.
