Enugu Governor Pledges 15,000 New Housing Units for Civil Servants by 2026

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has committed to delivering 15,000 mass-housing units for civil servants and middle-income earners by the end of 2026. The announcement was made during his lecture at the 4th Enugu Diocesan Synod of the Catholic Church in Ogui, Enugu.

Governor Mbah described the housing programme as a strategic initiative to expand access to affordable and dignified accommodation across the state. The plan complements broader government efforts to enhance urban living standards and stimulate socio-economic growth.

The governor highlighted the ongoing Enugu Smart City Project, which integrates modern housing, fibre-optic connectivity, and renewable energy systems. This initiative aims to improve quality of life for residents and attract private sector investment.

Industrial and Educational Developments

In addition to housing, Mbah announced the rehabilitation of the Aluminium Plant in Ohebe-Dim, Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area. Scheduled for commissioning on October 1, 2026, the upgraded facility will manufacture aluminium products and profiles, bolstering industrial capacity in the state.

Furthermore, the Enugu State University of Medical and Applied Sciences in Igbo-Eno has been upgraded to a full University Teaching Hospital, enhancing medical education and healthcare services in the region.

Role of Faith and Community Engagement

Speaking on the significance of faith institutions, Mbah stated that the church plays a critical role in shaping character, while government focuses on creating systems that enable societal development. He described the diocesan synod as a platform for “listening, reflection, and renewal.”

The 4th Enugu Diocesan Synod, opened by Bishop Calistus Onaga on November 16, 2025, will run until November 22 and focuses on the theme, “Promoting a Productive Economy in Enugu State.”

Conclusion

Governor Mbah’s announcement underscores Enugu State’s strategic approach to combining housing, industrial growth, and education infrastructure. For investors, policymakers, and urban development stakeholders, the initiatives signal a clear commitment to improving living standards, expanding economic opportunities, and fostering long-term regional growth.
