Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport Commences Commercial Operations

Ekiti State has officially commenced commercial operations at the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport, marking a significant milestone in the state’s aviation and economic infrastructure development. Governor Biodun Oyebanji disclosed that the project, spanning multiple administrations, has attracted a total investment of N49.7 billion.

The inauguration, held along Ado–Ijan Road on Wednesday, included the inaugural flight operated by United Nigeria Airlines from Abuja. Notable attendees included Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation Yakubu Adam Kofarmata, and former governors of Ekiti State.

Investment Profile and Project Completion

Governor Oyebanji outlined that prior administrations had invested N14 billion in preliminary works such as site clearing, compensation, regulatory approvals, and foundational infrastructure including portions of the runway, terminal building, control tower, aprons, and service roads. His administration contributed over N34 billion in the last three years to complete civil works, regulatory installations, and operational readiness for commercial flights.

Key developments under Oyebanji’s tenure include the completion of the terminal building, control tower, runway strip, perimeter fencing, drainage systems, embankments, and earthworks. An Instrument Landing System has been installed, and a Public-Private Partnership with Reeve Energy Nigeria Ltd. facilitated the construction of an aviation fuel tank. Construction of staff accommodation remains ongoing.

Collaborative Contributions and Legacy Recognition

The Governor acknowledged the collective efforts across successive administrations, describing the airport as a “shared legacy.” Special recognition was given to Aare Afe Babalola for donating navigational equipment valued at $1.6 million and constructing a 100-car parking facility worth N356.7 million.

In his remarks, Kofarmata, representing the Minister of Aviation, termed the airport launch a “historic milestone” for Ekiti, highlighting its potential to stimulate employment, enhance logistics, and attract investment in agriculture and trade.

Former Governor Kayode Fayemi commended the completion of the project, noting the state’s ability to deliver the airport despite fiscal constraints. The main contractor, CCECC Nigeria Ltd., described the facility as a “new sky gateway” poised to catalyse regional tourism, cargo transport, and global trade opportunities.

Strategic Significance for Aviation and Economic Growth

The airport is designed to support both passenger and cargo operations, positioning Ekiti as a regional hub for agro-allied exports. United Nigeria Airlines announced plans to introduce student discounts on flights, expanding access for young travellers and supporting human capital mobility.

Governor Oyebanji emphasised that the airport would “bring markets closer to our people and the world closer to Ekiti,” signalling broader ambitions for trade facilitation, investment inflows, and state-level economic diversification.

Context and Outlook

The Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport exemplifies the role of targeted infrastructure in advancing state and regional development. By integrating aviation capacity with agricultural and commercial logistics, the facility aims to enhance Ekiti’s competitiveness, attract private investment, and create employment opportunities.

Analysts note that such projects, when coupled with effective regulatory frameworks and stakeholder collaboration, can accelerate economic growth, improve connectivity, and position states as viable nodes in global trade networks.

The commercial launch underscores the importance of continuity in infrastructure delivery, with contributions spanning multiple administrations ensuring that long-term strategic projects reach operational fruition.
