Abuja's International Conference Centre Reopens with Improved Maintenance Strategy

Abuja's International Conference Centre (ICC) is set to reopen on June 10, 2025, after extensive renovations and the introduction of a new maintenance policy.

Renovation Details

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), under Minister Nyesom Wike, halted operations at the ICC in April 2024 due to poor maintenance by previous management. The comprehensive renovation was executed by Julius Berger, with the total cost reaching approximately ₦39 billion, following approval by President Bola Tinubu.

New Maintenance Approach

Minister Wike has announced that Julius Berger, the construction company responsible for the renovations, will now oversee ongoing maintenance activities. This approach replaces the previous method of assigning maintenance responsibilities to political appointees. The ICC will introduce a formal maintenance fee, requiring event organizers and users to contribute towards the facility's upkeep. Additionally, Julius Berger will be in charge of maintaining the newly installed technical systems.

Project Significance

The reopening of the ICC is part of a broader initiative by the FCTA, which plans to inaugurate a series of 17 major projects in Abuja over 17 consecutive days starting from June 10. Minister Wike has stressed the importance of strong leadership and clear accountability measures, warning that any civil servants who fail to perform effectively will be reassigned to ensure efficient administration.
