FCT Minister Wike Announces New Abuja City Gate Project Ahead of Tinubu Anniversary

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) will unveil a newly redesigned Abuja City Gate as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s third anniversary in office.

Wike disclosed this in Abuja after inspecting the ongoing reconstruction of the city gate and several other infrastructure projects across the capital. The project is expected to be completed and handed over to the government by the end of May.

The initiative forms part of a broader infrastructure programme aimed at improving the aesthetic appeal, connectivity, and urban functionality of Nigeria’s capital city.

Modernising Abuja’s Landmark Entrance

The Abuja City Gate serves as a symbolic entry point into the Federal Capital Territory. According to Wike, the redesign seeks to create a more prominent and visually distinctive landmark for the capital.

He noted that the existing structure no longer reflects the stature of Abuja as Nigeria’s administrative and diplomatic centre. The redesign was inspired by concerns raised by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, who argued that the capital city deserved a more befitting gateway.

The construction project is being executed by infrastructure firm Julius Berger, one of Nigeria’s largest engineering and construction companies. Officials expect the new structure to enhance the visual identity of the capital and improve the arrival experience for visitors entering the city.

Part of Wider Infrastructure Projects in the FCT

During the inspection tour, Wike also reviewed progress on several ongoing road and public infrastructure projects across Abuja.

These include the construction of roads linking Wuse II to the Central Business District, upgrades along the airport corridor, and new transport connections designed to improve mobility in emerging districts.

The minister also visited the road linking Baze University, the Body of Benchers complex, Nile University, and the Wupa Light Rail Station in the Idu area. He said the Body of Benchers office annex project is approximately 85 percent completed and expected to be delivered soon.

Additional projects under inspection include road works along the Bill Clinton Drive corridor from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport toward Tunga Madaki, which the minister directed contractors to extend to Zuba in order to strengthen connectivity along the northern gateway into Abuja.

Infrastructure Development Under the Renewed Hope Agenda

The projects are part of broader efforts by the FCTA to accelerate infrastructure delivery under President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” development agenda.

According to the minister, improving transport networks and urban infrastructure will help open up new communities, stimulate economic activity, and support Abuja’s long-term urban expansion.

Urban planners note that infrastructure upgrades including roads, public facilities, and landmark developments play a key role in shaping investor confidence and enhancing the competitiveness of capital cities.

Outlook

The planned unveiling of the redesigned Abuja City Gate is expected to coincide with several other infrastructure inaugurations during President Tinubu’s third anniversary celebrations.

For policymakers and investors, the project underscores the FCTA’s focus on combining urban aesthetics with transport and connectivity improvements as Abuja continues to expand. The completion of these initiatives could strengthen the capital’s position as a regional administrative and diplomatic hub while supporting broader urban development objectives.
